My buddy at work bought a 2006 GTO. I own a 2007 Cobalt LS and a 1988 Ram on air ride. I was going to supercharge my balt but my buddy set the bar higher with his damn GTO. So I sold my ram Sunday. Saving till April then buying a motor swapped 240. My question is, what kind of 240, motor swap, and hp will I need to beat him. I will have around 7 grand, maybe a little more. Any help would be awesome

If you're worried about straight line dragging, best bang for the buck is throwing nos on your car :)

And welcome, more people with better technical input will be here shortly to help you.

So, you want to buy a 20+ year old, motor swapped car to beat a 2006 GTO?

Buy a 91 coupe. Gut it, Swap in a VQ from a Z. Single turbo at 8 psi for 400whp and a light weight of 2200lbs. Laugh at your friend when he gets to the finish line for buying the worst retro car GM produced. Strike that the Monte Carlos were the worst.

One more thing, why do you own a slobalt?

Nobody wants to tell you the easy irresponsible way of doing it. 240+SR+14psi should be able to beat GTO. I've seen it done on more than one occasion against Camaro SS's. I've even seen 240 w/SR, GT2871r @ 16 psi pull on a fairly stock '03 Mustang SVT Cobra. So, it's not impossible like how some of these guys are making it sound. The hardest part is traction. Get anything close to 300 whp in a 240 and you'll be spinning most of that power away.

Another note on the Cobalt. Don't do it. I had a buddy with a mildly modified Cobalt SS and he ran over a second slower than I did at the track and I was on low boost and spinning all of first and part of second.

most muscle car guys i know are asses, because they have a v8. yes they're fast(450+ hp), and faster than me and my stock ka, but still. they're asses. go for ka24det or sr20det, then you can say, i have 4 less cylinder's than you! lol

That's just the way muscle car guys are or any domestic car guy for that matter. I had a guy with a Mustang V6 says his car is faster than mine. He ended up running 16's, while I ran a mid 13. Then I had a guy in a Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi try telling me I'll blow my SR revving up to 7000 rpm because my motor isn't a high performance engine like his Hemi. A lot of them are misinformed and have their heads too far up their @sses to accept anything that isn't a V8.

Traction is not that hard to get. Stiff damper with a med-soft coil. Then some 275 drag radials and your all set. I launched my KA-t at 6200 with 15psi and it just went with no spinning.

Yes, drag radials or slicks will help, but I get the feeling the OP is going to be running with regular street tires.

No vids, I did sell that engine to a guy on Nico about 4 years ago though. The only cam I had back then shook to much on the cage and never had that great of videos. I would really like to get a Go Pro HD motorsports cam, but don't have an extra $300 to spend on it. Those things have amazing watchable video even if the camera is being bounced around. Since then I've done a VQ35 swap and this winter I'm building it for boost.

OP, make sure you do some suspension mods and a good set tires so you can launch hard.

Going to be rolling races in mexico, street tires will be fine. His GTO is also an auto if that makes a difference

Oh dear lord, not at all. Some be some real jealousy going on between OP and GTO owner though. Best of luck OP. I believe, as has been mentioned before, the problem will be traction, not power. I didn't even think about this with my build :ohno: Time for some new wheels afterwards!

I don't want to turn this into a KA vs SR vs RB vs etc, but I think he's better off with a SR. While compared to the SR a KA-T can make more power with any given turbo, the SR is more noob friendly compared to the KA-T.

OP as far as your buddy's auto GTO, take a look at this.
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/pontiac-g ... times.html
It looks like high 13's, low 14's is the norm for what your buddy has. A very mildly mod SR on stock boost can run those numbers. I'd say get your 240, hook up an electronic boost controller, set up a low boost setting, and a high boost setting. Try him out on stock boost first and you can go up from there if you need to.

I'm going to buy one with all mods already done. I was 12 when I first saw the 89 on the showroom floor. Loved the 240 ever since.
