I know some of these are ball bearing and have an obvious advantage.

My question concerns the journal bearing type like the GT 32 that PDM has for like $650. The question is, what is so special about these?"

I've looked at the compressor maps and I'm not seeing anything special. Am I missing something?

You won't necessarily see the differences in the compressor maps.

The GT prefix stems from the innovation of New Garrett Technology, a program created when they began making lighter, more agressive wheels that spool up more quickly than the traditional T wheels. These NGT wheels quickly got the prefix shortened to GT.

A turbo having a GT prefix doesn't mean anything other than it has the lighter, quicker spooling wheels, that operate more efficiently overall.

A turbo having the suffix "R" indicates a ball bearing.

A turbo having the suffix "RS" indicates dual ball bearings.

Theyre just the next generation of wheels. I think theyre shaped a little differently to spool faster and be more efficient over a wider range.

Its been a while since I compared GT vs T comp maps, but I think I did notice a wider/higher range of efficiency.
