Found out why the e-brake was stuck on. The rear shoe hold downs had fallen apart allowing the shoes to become wedged against the drums. Took a sledge hammer to dislodge the drums. Once those came off a pile of brake hardware fell out too. I can't stress brake services enough people! Take the drums off, clean and lube everything twice a year. You will thank me later.

So the wife drove me to Advance Auto to return a tool in exchange for the hardware kit. Working on it now. I'll post results later tonight.

You know there are 2 threaded screw holes that you can put a bolt in and tighten and drums will pop off even when they are grooved and hard to remove. Just a tip. The bolts as tightened push drums right off. I hate drum brakes, springs are a biatch

If those threaded holes disappear from being eaten by rust, good luck re-tapping them to a larger size. They are so shallow, that the tap doesn't even start really cutting threads and it's already bottomed out through the drum.

It doesn't take a whole lot of time for the drums to become frozen to the axle. Carefully whacking them on the front side is the way to dislodge them in cases where the threads are gone.

If you still got the theaded holes, then it's all good. The rust where I live is relentless. My 1997 truck is in worse shape rust-wise than some trucks 3 times it's age. I battle it with everything I got, and it is still ultimately winning.

I would have fixed my E-brake, but it was the cable/gear under the truck that was all rusted and frozen. When I did my rear brakes, I left out the E-brake parts. If I have to park on a steep hill, its just not gonna happen.

hahaha, I had those two bolts cranked all the way into the drums and the shoes clung to the drum. Believe me, the sledge hammer is the final weapon in the arsenal.

The pivot under the cab was rusted, I worked that back into shape. The cables were cruddy but I hit them with some PB while the wifey worked the e-brake handle. After a few everything began to slowly work on its own. The only thing I have to replace is the return spring under the cab, mine is a bit rusty and tired.

Everything went back together nicely and now the truck rolls freely without the hanging brakes.
