As you all know, I'm not a computer nerd.

Here's the deal: My digital camera, when it unloads pics onto my hard drive, unloads them as JPG files. However, when I click on a pic and click "properties", it says it's a "QuickTime Picture".

Now - When I try to OPEN one of my pics on my HD, it asks me for some damn QuickTime file. I downloaded the latest version of QT, but it's still not working the way I want it.

My question is, is there any way to get all the pics on my HD to open with a program I actually understand? Like MS Paint or something like that?

I was advised to right-click on a pic and choose "Open With" but on my PC, I only get, "Open".

Sorry for being a computer 'tard... TIA for the helps!

Do you know what operating system you have?

Edit.. It doesn't matter really

Go to Start > Programs > Accesories > Paint

In paint: File > Open

In open dialog make sure "FIles of type:" says "All picture files" or "JPG/JPEG", then find your picture and press Open/OK

If you have an more advance picture program that came preinstalled than the same rules apply.

I think this will work with any MS OS:

Hold the shift key down and then right-click on the file. The popup menu should have an "Open with" option, which will allow you to select the program to open the file. You can also make the program the default app to open the file with.

If shift doesn't work, try ctrl.

the MIME file type could be incorrect or quicktime could have "stolen" the association.

That's what I was going suggest :pface

Along the same lines, here is my suggestion:-right-click on a picture, select "Properties"-the second or third option should be "Opens With:", here you can select the program which opens your pictures (MS Paint, Photoshop, Paint Shop, GIMP, whatever)

This works in WinXP, but the right-click "open with" should work in XP too, so I'm not sure if this will help. Let me know if it doesn't and I'll try to get you another way to do it. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure he has an Windows 95/98/ME abomination, as there are many more functions in XP for photos and there is the open with command

open quicktime.go to the "edit" menu

go to "preferences"

go to "quick time preferences"

in the new window, there will be a pull down menu. go to "file type associations"

at the bottom will be "internet file types [gif, jpeg, ect]"

uncheck the box.

close quicktime. ms paint or viewer will default as the associated program. if it does not, then double click the picture file. a box will open and say "open with"

choose the program you want, and make sure the box that says "always use this program" at the bottom is checked.

click ok.

your done.

w00t!

Robert's process worked (thanks to everyone else too!)

I do have Win 98. I also have a POS PC (HP Vectra PII, 333mHz), but it's the best I can do right now.

If anyone wants to "donate" WinXP to a poor NICO Admin, I'm down with that.

p.s. I set my picture viewer as "Paint". Would IE be a better viewer?

damn, i could send the OS to you, but you need it on a CD in order to boot from it to install the os. you could also place it on a seperate partition and make boot disks, but thats complicated. if you get lost in the middle of it, youll wind up screwed without a working OS.

:(

Maybe someone will hit me up with the CD at some point...

It's definitely time for a new PC. Probably gonna replace it right after Christmas. I'm looking at a Vaio with the RCA inputs and moviemaker software, as I have TONS of analog video I want to load, edit and burn onto DVD.
