It's always been implanted in every exhaust install instruction manual.... "Most important step, Ground Your Exhaust" my question is why? what does it do? what happens if it's not grounded? can somebody shed some light on this subject?

How would you go about grounding an exhaust? There was no grounding when I ripped my stock exhaust off. Confused.

ATTACH A CABLE FROM YOUR EXHAUST TO A SCREW ON YOUR SUBFRAME OR UNIBODY RAIL. ITS TO HELP PREVENT IGNITION WITHIN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND I'M SURE THERE ARE OTHER IMPORTANT REASON FOR DOING IT BUT THAT IS MY UNDERSTANDING.

Mine broke off, so I just took some wire out of my tool box and rigged it up, a week later I was under the car working on something, and all of the insulation had melted off the wire, there wasn't any left, anywhere. Suprised me to say the least. Then about a week later it got caught on something and was never seen again. And I haven't put a new ground wire on since.

The reason you need to ground your exaust is due to the fact that when exaust air moves throu the pipes it generates static electricity. There for you need to removed it from there in order to not ignite some exaust fumes.

so if there wasn't a ground wire, there would be flames shooting out of the exhaust once in a while?

if being bolted to the turbo which is connected to the manifold which is connected to the engine isn't enough of a ground (which they don't ground through the body of the sensor anyway) then i don't know what is.

basically it's to keep you from shooting flames

Speaking of shooting flames. A good friend of mine rigged two of his '50's hot rods up to shoot massive flames out the exhausts. All he did was rigged some spark plugs up into the tailpipes and rigged the carberators to feed the gas straight into the exhaust somehow. Of course he has to do this with the car turned off but he got really good at coasting in neutral downtown and shooting flames. He also said there's a way to do this with fuel injected cars but it's alot trickier. I would love to know how to do this. It's badass!!

If you want to know if your exhaust is grounded correctly:

Use a continuity checker between the metal bumper and the exhaust tip. If it has continuity, it is grouded, strap or no strap.

My strap came off with the factory exhaust also.
