I currenly have tein s-techs and stock struts. I don't race so it rides ok. I'm just looking to go lower. I've considered ebay coilovers, but I read that they've broke on people before.

My options are now sportlines, used GCs, or maybe I'll get lucky and find cheap used basic teins.

I've read that they're great on every car except a 240SX. I know that they're around $400 new and can be bought in 3 versions depeding on which struts you want to use. What do you know/think about them? Anyone run GCs? They don't seem to be popular for a 240SX.

I've seen a used set of GC that use the AGXs on ebay for $150 shipped. Will I be able to use any other struts on them?

The ONLY way to run ground controlls effectively and in a smart way is to use them with custom length dampers. You say you want to go lower, but you still plan on stock type shocks/struts. This will not work. You will loose a huge amount of suspension travel, and your car will handle like ****.

You basically have 3 options:

1.) Stick with a regular spring/shock setup2.) Ground controlls with expensive custom length and possibly custom valved dampers.3.) Buying coilovers which allow you go very low without loosing any amount of travel.

Just be patient and save up for a decent set of coilovers. You won't regret...

While it's not the cheapest option, I'd love to go with the Grouond Control Advance Design shocks/struts. $400 a piece though, but very nice build and double adjustable.

ground control owns those 2...theyre on like the same level as megans in my books, in other words at that point you might as well spend the extra couple hundred and get KTS or stance

used coilovers arent a good idea, big investment for dampers in who knows what condition...its like buying a set of used tires and hoping theyll be nearly new

Im always weary about buying used stuff, but sometimes you can luck out. I got my Tein Basics for $550, and they were only used for 2,000 miles before the guy crashed his car.

well thats not all that much less than they go for new, so thats not bad

but 90% of the used coilover stories i hear are "zomg mint condition kei office for $200 with FRESH REBUILT DAMPERS"

then the person gets them and 3 are blown beyond belief and theyre covered in rust

Ive seen these on their site (gorund-control-store.com), but they dont have any applications listed. Is there another GC or vendor site with more info?

I think I'm missing something here. Looking at 'real' coilovers (KTS, Tein), theyre height adjustable over a great range (3 inches or so?). So why would revalved Koni also require shortening to be used which GC sleeves that adjust only 2 inches (according to their site)? Seems like the valving should determine how much of a drop and how large a range of drop the dampers can handle.

The front struts on the 240 don't have much travel. You'll either start hitting the bumpstops all the time or in a worst case scenario, you'll essentially be riding on nothing but the bumpstops.

As far the advance-design stuff, call them. They make many custom apps and actually have built these for the 240.

Coilovers allow you to adjust ride height without affecting compression travel at all, unless you droop the spring. You would need custom length shocks to run GC because if you drop a car 2" on stock spring/shock type setup, you lose 2" of compression travel, which is ALOT, and will cause what Ckwik said.

you are looking at this totally the wrong way. A damper only has X amount of total travel. When the car is on the ground, the damper piston's are at a certain position in the middle of the total travel range. If you lower a car nearly X amount of inches, you now have almost no compression travel left.

You don't valve dampers to support a certain ride height, you valve them to work with a specific spring rate.

Dean, I just don't get it man.... Once I was explaining forced induction on the vortex to some guy who.... needed some assistance and I had to go to the trouble of scanning a hand written explanation of air mass induction through the intake valves as a function of time that involved four comprehensive diagrams, and a broken down, lecture worthy version of the ideal gas law. This was just to assist in illustrating a basic principle of forced induction. AND I STILL DIDN'T GET ANY RESPECT FROM THE GUY, NOT EVEN A G*D D*MN THANK YOU . If anything he was bitter about it. You guys are so lucky to have so much mutual respect within your motoring community. I'll sum it up with a quote from Eurotuner, "Sometimes there is as much competition within the VW community as with other makes." They were being modest when they said sometimes. There is only a small group of VW enthusiasts that I've encountered that truly get along with and respect their peers. Anyway, didn't mean to threadjack, just thought I'd comment on how you guys actually LISTEN to and HELP each other.

I think its about attitude man. Its pretty clear that there are some things Dean knows that I dont. Some I can figure out for myself, some I should be able to figure out for myslef (see above), and some I just need an explanation on.

We've bumped heads before but it wasnt cause I didnt respect him or his opinion. If anything I respect him more for still helping explain things to me. So +1 for Dean

Hang around VR6. I'm a VW fan and I need some help convincing some guys that VW's are OK. You dont have to drive a Nissan to be cool with NICO. Just ask all the new members that joined after seeing NICO represent at NOPI.

Maybe Greg will get even more ambitious and start up VICO?
