i just bought my 05 sedan, 6speed and love it so far. its only got 7k on it. i'm concerned with a noise. it is a grind/rattle sound that occurs about 10 seconds after i start my car. it seems to only occur when the steering wheel is turned but i'm not sure and that may be coincidence. it seems also to occur after going in reverse, then i put the car in first and thats when i hear the sound. it only lasts about a half second. what could this noise be? i know they'll say its nothing at the dealer. or offer to tear my engine apart and if they find nothing, i'm in the hole several thousand dollars.

Sounds like the dual-mass flywheel. Is it a similar noise when the car is shut off when the clutch is up? I also hear it when I'm at a drive through window at idle-goes away if I engage the clutch.

If its the flywheel, it's a normal noise.

Another possibility is the anti-lock brakes are doing a system check around that time.

i'll have to check about the flywheel. when you say "clutch is up", do you mean with the clutch pedal off of the floor (engaged) or do you mean on the floor (disengaged)?

thank you

Clutch is up = engaged

Try shutting the car off with the clutch disengaged...no rattle noise.

You're probably hearing a normal noise.

It's the ABS self-test. You will find that it's more pronounced in cold weather, and probably when backing down steep inclines.

My wife noticed it on our G - which made me so proud We've gone from her thinking that the oill pressure idiot light on a Mercury Tracer is the "oil chainge light thingy" to her actually noticing something like this!
