When I shift into 2nd and 4th I hear a grinding type of noise, I have a feeling it's the synchro's but im not completely sure. Also it comes out of gear and shifts to neutral when I am in 3rd and sometimes 5th. I've been told the coming out of gear could be linkage, support bracket, etc. Is there any way to be sure what it is before I order something? I really don't want to pay someone to check whats wrong because shops charge too much for labor.

The car has a short throw shifter which ive heard causes this grind on more 300's than a regular shifter.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like your looking for a new used trans. Pop outs are usually related to dog teeth wear on a given gear, grinds are likely synchro's which is further wearing dog teeth on those gears. You could tear it down and buy new bits or have it done professionally or for a lot less money just buy a used trans.

That's what I was thinking. Guess I'll drive it easy and save up some money and go buy a used tranny.

Changing out the trans fluid for fresh stuff might smooth things out a touch until you get a replacement.
