I've had the same problem recently... I noticed it happens only in the morning/ when its a little colder or the engine hasn't been running for a while. Its in the exact same place (driver side rear) and it's a very loud crunching/grinding noise that feals like it has way too much force to be overlooked.

How would replacing struts/shocks help this?

I had and now again have a similar issue. I had the same problem on the left rear. It had to do with one of the bolts that locks the caliper to the wheel drum broke. So what happens when you go in reverse the brake pad and caliper shift. I found an old bolt from a pile of bolts and screws that I had lying around and it stopped once i put a bolt in, but now its acting up again. I haven't verified if its the exact same problem. But it sure sounds like it.
