2015 Versa Note with 131655 miles. Owned vehicle for over a year and have since noted a grinding-type noise that I have yet to discover what it is! I DON'T believe it's a normal sound for an engine. It's usually heard at idle and in park/neutral gear. Once in gear, the sound is gone, until I start moving. As long as I'm below 40mph, the sound is heard. The best description (of the sound) I can come up with is similar to what we used to do with attaching a card to the frame of a bike and let the rim spokes rub against the card to create a "motor" sound. RPM's are normal and stable throughout a drive and/or in park. Using a sound stethoscope, I've checked the engine pulleys and those check out ok. I poked around other areas with the steth and I cannot pinpoint where it's coming from. Without the steth, it sounds like it's coming from the intake manifold area. If it is from within, what am I looking for to confirm? Engine oil is at normal range. I've done regular routine maintenance. Engine mounts look ok. In the near future, I'll pull out the manifold and inspect it, but I don't expect to find anything. I recently changed the serpentine belt (showing wear/cracking) and tension pulley. Grinding noise is still there. Some of the research I've done indicate that it may be the flywheel engagement lock pin. This "pin" might be loose and rubbing against the flywheel. However, the sound isn't coming from the flywheel area. Any ideas please?

The first thing to do is pop that new belt off and confirm that it isn't something on the belt. Among other things, Nissan alternator clutches are notorious for making all sorts of weird noises. If the noise is still there with the belt removed, then put your steth on the front of the engine while the belt is off. If you hear it most from the timing cover then you probably have worn out chain guides and you're hearing the chain slap.
