I just got my first 240 about a week ago. It's a 1991 240sx Fastback with an SR swap. The body has 225,000 miles on it and the engine and transmission both have about 50,000 on them. There is an upgraded SPEC stage 3 clutch with about 10,000 miles on it, as well as a new master cylinder. The problem I am having is as I am about to accelerate, it sounds as if I am grinding the hell out of the clutch, but only happens ever so often, especially when I am trying to turn a little. This also occurs in fourth gear if I'm in the higher RPMs (over 4,000).

I'm pretty much stumped on this one. I've looked up similar problems as to mine, and all I am seeing is talk about adjusting the clutch and getting a new master cylinder, both I have already done. I am really considering it to be the transmission slipping and about to get a new one. Any input on my problem would be very much appreciated, as I am brand new to the whole Nissan scene and the forums :) .

I never heard of a clutch grinding so... but try to adjust your pedal to make sure its engaging fully! Try redline mt90, my gears were grinding and 2nd and 3rd and once i got the redline they barely grind now and it seems to be getting better and better.

Thanks for the replies. I have adjusted the pedal to where it should be and is engaging fully, so that eliminates that problem. If this makes it any easier, the grinding in first gear occurs a lot more often if I am turning the steering wheel a little, then a loud grinding sound happens until I get going a little. In fourth it still makes a grind if I am in higher RPMs as I stated above. I'd really like to know if there is any way of fixing this problem without purchasing a new transmission :frown:

Any other ideas? I'm more focused on the grind in first gear, considering it is much worse sounding. It's almost if I am letting the clutch go about half way, give it a little gas, and it just grinds and grinds until I accelerate.

Find a transmission shop that will do a free driven diagnosis. A lot of shops are hurting and if it may lead to business, cannot afford to turn you down, even if you don't proceed with work, but sounds like internal damage to the transmission. Not sure what relevance turning the steering wheel has...some kind of misalignment I suppose. all bolts on the bell housing are tight n proper? Best of luck.

you sure its your transmission and not something else mimicking the grinding sound! PS pump, rack and pinion shot? let us know what you find out!!
