grinding and stalling

my friends 93 hb has been having some problems. He let me drive his car to give me a feel of whats going on. Here's what I found. grinding noise when i engage to 1st gear - grinding disappears after 5-10 mph. also the car stalls if left in gear when stopping. I say clutch problems and prolly syncros. what do U guys think.

what do you mean? when your stopping, and you put the car in neutral, it stalls?

- yup...the car stalls when its in neutral.

- I read the thread...that is the exact problem that the car had. funny how it was posted just a couple of days. Thanks for the link.

but what do you think is causing the grinding sounds. it sounds like its coming from the transmission housing
