Well, mine was doing that a while back, what happened was I filled it all the way up to where the shifter is with some good quality gear oil from amsoil, their raceing series 2000 which has a blue color to it to be exact (about 9 bucks per quart), and ran it for about a couple of miles just so everything in there kinda gets like a full flush if you get what I mean, then open the fill plug on the side of the transmission so the over-fill will drain out. When no more gear oil is leaking from the side, put the fill plug back in. That's how I was able to stop the grinding in my transmission. It still grinds however if you do fast power shifts (keep full throttle while shifting) from 2nd to 3rd but not under normal driving.

Just in case you are wondering how the gear oil level up that high, I filled it from where the shifter is. Take out the shifter and fill it till it's over the bar that your shifter moves back and forth to change the gears.

THANK YOU Silivia007 i will try that but how exactly do u remove the shifter i know how to get to it i just dont know how you remove the snap ring....ALSO Is there a certain reason why 3rd gear grinds is it my synchros worn out?? how would i go about fixing that?? anyone got a # of the amount of quarts the transmission needs??

The snap ring can be taken out by getting a small needle nose pliers, a set that is small enough to fit into the two holes of the snap ring. Squeeze it as hard as you can and pull it out at the same time, if it still won't budge, you can squeeze and use a movement like "hammer taking out a nail" and it should pop out.

As for syncros, I think it's cheaper to get find a junk yard with a 240 in there and buy a transmission from there. Replacing syncros usually require a transmission rebuild which could be quite costly, even more so then a SR20DET.

As for the amount of gear oil... there's a fill plug on the side of the transmission that is a pretty large square bolt. if you are looking up at the transmission and you are lined up with the drive line, the plug should be to the right side of the transmission about half way up. Just open that and any excess gear oil will leak out and when no more gear oil comes out of that hole, that means you've got the right level of gear oil. But if you must know the exact, from the FSM it is exactly 2.5 qts for a 93 manual and auto takes about 4.5 qts. I'm sure the trannys for 91+ are all the same. Hope this helps

Yeah it mainly is the syncros getting worn out. If it gets to the point where the syncro is completely out then you can double clutch. this is how double clutch is done.

1. If in gear, step on clutch and get to neutral2. Let go of clutch3. Step on clutch and put in the next gear

Gets annoying at first but if you get used to it, it's not too bad.

i have the same problem with grinding but i grind in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. i only grind when i am coasting or braking. could there be something super wrong with my synchronizers or is my transmission just a piece. btw, my grind sounds like a 737 landing, its very embarassing when i see a cute girl on the street and i have to switch to neutral so i dont grind.

How many miles do you have on that transmission already? Does anyone know when should a transmission be rebuilt?

if your talking to me, i think it has 109,000mi. on it. i went pretty rough on it for the five or weeks that i had it as i was learning how to drive manual. i think a transmission should be rebuilt when it you think its time. depending on how rough you are on your transmission, i understand that it could last anywhere from 50,000-250,000mi. of course i could be wrong:D
