Hello Everyone... I just traded my '02 Nissan Maxima GLE (156,000 mi) for an '07 Nissan Altima 3.5 SL (20,000 mi)

I have a question for everyone... Every time I start the car, and begin to drive, I hear this quick grunt, or grind sound right about 10 mph... This doesn't happen any other time, i.e. from a stop sign, or stop light... I thought it could have been something in the CVT, or in the engine...

I talked to a friend of mine (Infiniti Master Tech) that hasn't heard it for himself yet, and he said it is probably an ABS Self Check...

Does anyone else have this issue, or has anyone heard of this... is this even an issue...

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Everyone!

Sounds like the ABS self check to me. Completely normal operation. You're good!

ABS self-check is more of a clunk. Usually happens the first time you start the car and exceed 5-10 mph. If you are hearing grinding, then something else is causing that noise, and I would be worried.

Just wanted to chime in on this subj too since I Googled this exact thing and found this forum discussion.

I recently bought a 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE and had noticed the 'clunk' sound at approximately 10 mph exactly as Robilles described (i.e. only after starting the car and reaching 10 mph for the first time, not after stopping at a stop sign and accelerating, also happens when driving in manual shift mode). When the 'clunk' happens, the gas pedal also vibrates a bit.

I'll call Nissan and ask about the ABS self-check and thank you to those who responded to this forum discussion.

Sorry I never followed up on my own post. I had the dealer check it out when I got an oil change... This was concluded to be a ABS self check. Happens about 10mph when you first drive the car. Lower the milage, quicker the sound. This is what I was told. Good luck.
