Post

I've been lurking the forums for a few days now and thought I'd drop in an introduction.

Background -

I'm 37, have three children 17, 15, 14 (Girl, boy, boy) as each of them hit about 13/14 years old I made them a deal - whatever money they saved up, I would match to help them buy their first car. I'm not the type of parent that goes out and gets their kids a brand new car - just not going to happen. I think they need to learn the joys of ownership and the pride of getting something you worked hard for.

Recently, (as in yesterday) my oldest boy took me up on my offer and we went searching for vehicles. I've got a history of working and dealing with classic American muscle (ford, chevy, dodge, AMC) but never ventured into the import market. We looked at over 10,000 vehicles over the course of a few months and finally stumbled across a 1990 Nissan 240 SX Hatchback. It's a higher mileage car, sitting at 180k, but in my reading, there's not much to worry about if the car was maintained well. The seller had a record of almost every oil change and filter change and repair history we could imagine. No smoke when we got into it (and holy cow I didn't expect that torque from a 4 cylinder) and a pretty cool ride. it's a 20 year old car so it's not perfect - seat cushions (driver side especially - owner was a real big person) need work, the back quarter panels were dented in a little (1/4 inch on one side, about inches on the other, neither compromised the hatchback seal). Car is pretty loaded, power everything, automatic, moon roof, AC, etc... Thanks to the forums and tech notes here, I think I was able to weed out the possible pit falls - no marble noises, no trunk rust or door rust and the like. Like I said, it's a 20 year old car with 20 year old paint and 180k miles so there's work to be done, which was expected.

Anyway, we managed to get into it for 1,200 which for a running car that doesn't need any work to drive I thought was excellent. Then i started looking at all the after market parts and options available with my son, and it just sold the car for us.

So thought I'd drop a note, maybe post a picture which I'll try now, hopefully it'll work.

So that's it - figured I'd post, get some thoughts of where to start - keep in mind, this is my son's car. His money, his name on the title, he worked for it. The cost is his to bear. I know I'd like to get brake work done first, they seem a little soft. The rear spoiler has got to go (giant sponge rust maker) and after that, Alex (my son) wants to start on the inside and work his way out to the exterior. His thoughts was he didn't want to worry about scratching the paint while putting in new carpet, speaker boxes, or maybe putting in a turbo.

Welcome to NICO! I'm sure you'll find this after a little bit of looking, but there are some common brake upgrades available to the 240sx. We can pretty much just swap parts with bigger Nissan/Infiniti products with bigger brake calipers and rotors like the Infiniti J30 or Q45 and the Z32 300zx.

Once you settle in on which brake upgrade seems best for you, I might recommend focusing your attention on replacing all of the worn out rubber bushings with a Polyeurathane Master Bushing kit and also the subframe bushings. Keep in mind though, that if you plan on uprading swaybars and stuff, most of them already come with new bushings too...

That should keep you guys busy for a little bit until the kid starts talking about coilovers... lol. Maybe you should tell him to sign up on here too and he can start doing his own car homework! We've got tons of young owners like your son here and some have built some pretty incredible cars... :dblthumb:

Looks like a solid car. Wouldn't take too much work to make it right either. Welcome to the 240 world. I'm sure your son will enjoy the availability of a ton of aftermarket parts. There are a lot of nice S13s out there as well! Tons of inspiration to be had.

Welcome. A 240sx is a great first car/project. As you'll see they're super easy to work on and parts are abundant.

As far as the brakes, check your master cylinder and make sure it's working properly. What I would do, as suggested above, is pick up some bigger front calipers. Get some good condition Q45 front calipers from a junkyard. Or if you don't feel comfortable with used parts, pick up some re-maned ones. That's what I did. They bolt right up save cutting the dust shield and drilling the rotors for 4 lug. GREAT upgrade for not that much money.

And oh yeah, if the seats are in bad condition, trash them. S13 seats are unsupportive and uncomfortable. You'll be able to pick up some S14 (95-98) seats for about $120 if you know where to look. Another great upgrade.

Anyways, welcome to NICO. There's tons of info floating around here.

Excellent - I've told him to swing by the forums.

We're in Georgia, too - maybe y'all will run into each other sometime (although not literally... don't want to mess up the cars :gapteeth: )

Thanks everyone else for the welcome - going to look into the Q45 calipers and the how-to's here on the forums.

North east part - a once small town called Loganville.

Thanks AZ for the linkage - looks like he can get Q45 rotors for about 50 bucks a pop and the calipers for about 60 each.

Easy upgrade, it looks like. I need to look into getting the rotor's re-drilled, I'm sure he's got the 4-lugs.
