Depending on the thickness of the cast iron object, it should also be welded using a torch rather than arc welding or it's variants. Arc welding will heat the area local to the weld much too quickly, even if you preheat it as electric welders bring the metal local to the weld up to extremely high temps. it should also be cooled slowly in an oven like device. The temperature decrease over an alloted timeframe seems to be a gray area, as different welders seem to have differing opinions.
