Well I just pulled apart the good ol CA18det to find out that it detonated. Pistons were chewed and head was mangled. Strange thing is the greddy 1.2mm metal headgasket I put on about 2 years ago only had coolant passage holes on one cylinder. I didn't notice it before but the 4 coolant holes around every cylinder looked blocked minus the 1st cylinder. The other 3 cylinders had one 1/4 in diameter hole where one of the coolant passage holes should have been bigger. Am I tripping or is this a common thing with metal headgaskets? It looks like the forgot to finish cutting out the headgasket. Do any other metal headgaskets have this type of design?

That doesn't sound right. Maybe you detonated becouse you had hotspots from not enough coolant flow.

However...

Nada, look at it closely. It's supposed to be that way. The water is purposely flowed up into the head and then directed out the intake manifold to the thermostat. If there were coolant ports in all of the cylinders then the coolant flow wouldn't have direction.

Yes you did! I tried searching for them when I was posing that answer, but I couldn't remember who did it.

Thanks guys I figured greddy engineered it to be that for flow but my dad was making me think otherwise. ~30 drift events and 20,000 miles have claimed the life of this CA. Oh Well. I picked up another one the other day that happened to come with an OS Giken twin plate clutch and s15 turbo. Dont know what the internals look like till I get back from work on Sat.

Would it be worth it to use the old greddy metal headgasket since it wasn't the problem? I also want to use the ARP headstuds that were in the old motor, they are reusable right?

If the gasket isn't damaged, put it to work again. And yes, you can reuse the ARP bolts as well.
