before you all start clicking on the RB or SR I mean as the engine related to it's contemporaries at the time it was produced, how cutting edge it was with the technology at that time and how it has fared over the years as newer designs come out.

I have a list of what I would consider Nissan's best engines:

A seriesS seriesL seriesRB seriesSR seriesVG seriesVQ series

I think those are the biggest winners. I think overall I'm gonna have to go with the L series. I think it made the biggest impact of any. A series was a bulletproof, economic motor. S series was very powerful for its size. L series had it all.... powerful, strong, and came in many different flavors. RB....(need I say it?), SR is one of the most overbuilt 4 cylinder engines ever made from *any* manufacturer. VG is simply very reliable. And VQ is very powerful and quiet.

hey, madscientist, you live in japan right, how easy is it to track down an old skyline? how expensive are they and do you know if you could bring one over here? i know parts would be a ***** to get, but it would be cool to have one.

If you find one that is atleast 25 years old you can import it legally as a classic car. There was a guy at Nopi this year that had a white 71 GT-R. There are pictures of it on this site, if you go to the main page and do an article search for "nopi" you should find it.

I think the FJ series is one of the best, right up there with the CA and the RB series

I agree that the FJ and CA were some of the best engines Nissan ever made, but neither revolutionized Nissan. That's why I didn't list them. All the ones I listed actually changed the way people saw Nissan. But like I said, I agree both of those are great engines, just weren't very popular (compared to the ones I listed).

The CA was way ahead of its time, and didnt last very long. it is a good engine, but like EZ said, it didnt change the way people looked at Nissan. The new VQ and QR engines are really great, some of the best Nissan has made.

*cough* QR *cough*..... don't make me gag. The QR is one of the worst engines Nissan has made. I own one, I should know.

A guy just sold a Kenamari model (early seventies, looked like a mustang Mach 1) for 800000 yen. Don't cry even though I did because I could have bought it, at today's yen rate $6,666.67.Fully restored like new with a 3.1 stroker L, $1000.00 Wakos CDI multi coil ignition, 48mm webers, and sweet Watanabe rims. I could have killed him, I have been hounding him about the car for years and he didn't even call me!!!!That is a special case though your average old school Skyline goes for about $10,000.00 and has a ton of rust. I may be stepping back into an R30 Paul Newman four-door I found quite by accident for about $400.00. It was sitting in the back of the car lot and i asked the guy if he was selling it, he said "parts only". He was going to pull the close ratio transmission out of it for his Z and chuck it. I may have saved it by giving him my transmission and some coin for it. This is the first Skyline model i ever owned and I am really excited

I think the L series wins the answer to the original question. It seems to be unanimous. Even those who like other engines seem to say "L series" first :)
