Missouri official apologizes to third-party candidates for reference in militia report

References to Bob Barr, Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin to be removed from MIAC report

By Chad [email protected]

Inside Missouri Politics blog

JEFFERSON CITY — The head of Missouri's Department of Public Safety apologized Monday in a letter to third-party 2008 presidential candidates Ron Paul, Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin for a recent state report that linked militia members to political parties outside the mainstream.

The Missouri Information Analysis Center's controversial Feb. 20 report has created a firestorm among conservatives in the past week because it indicates people who support small government, oppose abortion and illegal immigration and voted for Paul, Barr or Baldwin in the November 2008 election may be part of the "modern militia movement."

The report, which was leaked to the press after being distributed to the state highway patrol, was prepared on official state letterhead and contained Gov. Jay Nixon, Department of Public Safety Director John Britt, Missouri Highway Patrol Colonel James Keathley and MIAC Director Van Godsey's names at the top of the document, which is labeled "UNCLASSIFIED/LAW ENFORCEMENT SENSITIVE."

Last week, Paul, Barr and Baldwin wrote the Nixon administration a letter demanding an apology and explanation for why their supporters were being targeted in the official government document meant to educate police officers on how to profile for militia members who may seek to be domestic terrorists.

"Portions of that report may be easily construed by readers as offensive to supporters of certain political candidates or to those candidates themselves," Britt wrote in his apology letter to Paul, Barr and Baldwin. "I regret that those comments were ultimately included in the final report issued by the MIAC."

The Springfield News-Leader obtained a copy of Britt's letter late Monday night from the Missouri Libertarian Party, which praised the state for agreeing to remove the third party politicians' names from the report.

"This is a case where the government has responded to the public’s objection, reevaluated a controversial practice and responded by addressing the problem," Mike Ferguson, spokesman for the Missouri Libertarian Party, http://www.lpmo.org/media/rele...shtmlsaid in a statement posted on the party's Web site.

Britt said the militia report was part of the Department of Public Safety's routine intelligence gathering and dissemination to law enforcement agencies.

"Unfortunately, in the course of preparing this report, some regrettable information was included in the report on militia groups in Missouri," Britt wrote. "While the intent of the report was only to identify certain traits that are sometimes shared by members of militia organizations, this report is too easily misinterpreted as suggesting that militia members may be identified by no other indicator than support for a particular candidate or political organization."

(http://www.news-leader.com/assets/pdf/DO131243323.PDF Download John Britt's full letter here)

In the report, the authors warned law enforcement officers that "militia members most commonly associated with 3rd party political groups."

"It's not uncommon for militia members to display Constitution Party, Campaign for Liberty, or Libertarian material," the report said. "These members are usually supporters of Presidential Candidate: Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr."

Baldwin was the Constitution Party's 2008 presidential candidate. Barr ran on the Libertarian ticket, while Paul, a congressman from Texas, ran deep into the Republican Party, even after Arizona Sen. John McCain had locked up the nomination.

(http://www.news-leader.com/assets/pdf/DO131242323.PDF Download a copy of the entire "MIAC Strategic Report" on the "Modern Militia Movement" here)

The report also says current world economic turmoil and the election of Democrat Barack Obama — an African American — as president has created a "lush environment for militia activity," especially among white supremacists.

It also offers law enforcement a guide to the ideologies "members of the militia movement often subscribe to."

The state's report labels "right-wing" people with a "Christian Identity" and people who believe "that the government has gotten away from the intent of Constitution" and consider it "not valid" as possible members of militias.

Keith Rodgers, chairman of the Greene County Libertarian Party, said he was pleased the state has apologized for labeling Barr supporters as possible members of militias. But he said Britt's letter doesn't go far enough to explain why the report was compiled in the first place and why it says nothing about radical left-wing terror groups, such as the Earth Liberation Front (ELF).

“That’s all fine and dandy that they’ve backed off on this, but the damage has been done," said Rodgers, who lives in Republic. "How can we know this won’t just be a wink and a nod and a ‘OK, we’re sorry we called you domestic terrorists?'"[/quote]Short version: The state released a profile to police about people likely to be domestic terrorists. This includes anyone with a Ron Paul bumper sticker who believes "that the government has gotten away from the intent of Constitution". The state has apologized.

Im sure im on a list. Its not unfounded paranoia.

Where there is smoke, theirs fire. Here is a perfect example of a fire. There is a LOT more smoke.

Pisses me off when people stick their heads in the sand, and are constantly complaining and denouncing all conspiracy theories without even giving the long running theories that have at least some level of credence a second thought. When stuff like this comes around, those people are usually silent. Pathetic.

LOL, is the "change" that 2009 is now somehow an election year?

I'm still thinking Ron Paul 2012 on the Libertarian ticket. He has to understand the importance that this would have relative to running as a Republican (where he would have zero impact).

I'm pretty sure they'd consider me a domestic terrorlst if they knew my political viewpoints whether I got a Ron Paul bumper sticker or not.

I will now, in a single picture and a short explanation, explain why Ron Paul will never be recognized by the American public:

Those shoes will not get 5% of the American public's vote.

I was wondering when someone would say something about that thing they circulated in the department. I heard a couple of interviews where people got harassed following this document's release.

Why do the police find it absolutely necessary to make someone a criminal for almost no reason?

I hate misdemeanors they are mostly nothing crimes that just act as a tax on those who happen to do these things.

I wear my sneakers with my suits too. Do you know why? Doctor's orders. I'm not allowed to wear shoes w/o support due to my back problems. He may very well have similar problems and need to wear those shoes, but no, let's unilaterally dismiss him for not wearing a pair of Doc Martens.

Or maybe he buys his shoes at Wal-Mart to show that you can get by on less

Listen, folks, I'm not arguing that the shoes matter to us.

I'm telling you that the shoes to matter to the voting public.

See the GOP buying Palin clothes after she got picked. The devil is in the details.

Regardless, it's true that it matters, that's what bothers me. To some people that alone is enough reason to vote for someone else, despite the fact that there may be a really good reason.

There is some guy that got stopped at St. Louis and was asked why he had 4,700 bux in cash on him, what he did for a living and he only said is he required to answer the question.

The guy recorded it all on his phone and turns out he had some Ron Paul paraphernalia on him. I am told he said that is why the TSA stopped him. He said he almost missed his plane.

If he missed his plane I would look it up on the internet. But since he made it, to me it doesn't sound like a big deal, because I am told that he pulled out a wad of cash to go through the x-ray machine (I guess).
