No, It's not what you thought, but now that I have your attention... (just keeping the moderators on their toes)

I've heard and seen a lot of talk on here about poor quality gasoline and how cars "Knock" if they get poor performance... what exactly am I listening for with a case of the Knocks? (or pings)

I've had several cars and have driven for many years, but I don't think I could accurately Identify a pinging sound from the engine? Maybe I'm just fortunate that I've never heard this, but what does it sound like?

On a computer controlled car you should never hear knocking. PCM will pull timing before it is bad enough to hear/break chit.

On my 2004 Hemi Ram I could plug in my scanner and watch timing/knock sensor/fuel trim bank1/fuel trim bank 2 all on the same screen. The higher octane the fuel the lower the fuel trim values the higher the timing the faster my track times up until about 100 octane. 108 octane didn't go any faster then 92 octane + NOS octane boost. 92 + 6 points Octane boost was good for a tenth in the 1/8th mile and almost 2 mph.

Carb non fuel injected hot rod, stand on the gas and you will hear knocking it is a knock that doesn't follow the rpm engine noise. It will sound like something wrong.

BTW great thread title!

Engine knock as a result of detonation or pre-ignition will sound like a can of ball bearings being rattled.
