Assume responsibility for what YOU do though, read what he says CAREFULLY, not "oh, so all I do is ..." NO. Read carefully. Preferably more than once, and read the follow up articles that are available when you sign up for the free magazine subscription. They'll probably be the best tech articles you'll ever read.

Yeah that is a good articles, it's the second time I'v come across it. My only question now, after reading it again, is what is the 'recommended' warm-up procedure on a new engine?. I'll be installing a fresh KA in a week or so and this would really be good to know. I planned on just running it for 5+ mins in the garage(no revving, just idling) to make sure it's OK. Then after having it on the street for maybe 5mins it should be warm enough to do some accel/decel cycling. I gather from the read that allowing the engine to 'brake' the car is just as important as it is to not fear the throttle.

What tips can others give about fresh startups? I'v never cranked over a fresh engine, and don't really know what to expect/look out for. I'm guessing there'll be a period of smoking for a few minutes, but how much is too much? Also should I stop the engine after say 5mins, and inspect the plugs, etc to check for signs of rich/lean conditions?

Any insite is appreciated.

Oh an FWIW, a couple years back I had a crate motor installed in my '94 pontiac... I babied that new motor like I had a glass gas pedal. It never once equaled the power output that my original motor had, even with a blown head gasket/warped head. I think the above article has a lot of merit.

yeah, a few years back I rebuilt the motor for my '73 VW beetle. New bottom end, jugs (cylinders) pistons rings, ect... And got the best advice from the shop guy: warm it up, then drive it hard. That little 1776cc would scream. This is definately the way to go.
