So I've been shopping around for a low-cost Q replacement... everything including a 99+ G20, 96+ I30, 95+ Mazda Millenia, and 5-spd Mazda 626 (owned one before, loved the snickety shifter!). The Mazda MPV (52k) is going to my younger brother in August. So I've got lots of time to save and shop.

We all like to bicker about our massive parts costs, chain guide failures, and fuel system problems on our Q45s. But after looking around, it seems that the 95+ Millenia's (supercharged versions) have an equally rare (compared to guide failure) problem with oil seals failing on the supercharger. Otherwise, theyre mechanically rock solid.

Cost? Over $4000 in just parts.Ouch!

If I had $4k to blow, I'd blow it on a VH45DE. And $1600 for guides and a pan drop seem like nothing in comparison, for a $40k car with a powerful V8 and enough panache and performance to give a brand new E-420 owner a scare. Try justifying that expense for a 210hp 2.3L V6 on a small vehicle without a luxury nameplate.

My reason for giving up old Qs for a while, is a total lack of time to devote to anything but general maintenance. And with family and friends across the country, I dont want to risk mechanical failures during a road trip. I'd hate to get stuck in Hicksville USA again attracting leery stares and suspicious looks from the locals. (Looking like a terrorlst sucks. I don't fly anymore.)

Its a hobby, and now with college I just dont have time for an old Q anymore. :( It was great though when I was unemployed and had nothing else to do!

So I lean again toward the 99 G20 and the 96 I30. Why G20? The enthusiast in me longs for a manual shifter. I like the way the 5-speed Maxima drives, but the shifter is too, how do I put it, "long throw" like.

In 260,000 miles and 14 years of driving the 90Q, I have never had to use the spare tire and have only had a battery jump twice [the most recent was 6 years ago].

The car has been flat bedded once when a stainless steel brake line failed...........I saw the kink and the stress but ignored it! .....at 240,000 miles.......the lines purchased from Stillen in 1994 had 190,000 miles on them.

But then again the car has never been more than 700 miles from home. All failures occurred within 20 miles of home.

Would I drive it to the West Coast sure, if I had to.

The secret is that I change my tires often never letting them see much more than 20,000 miles [maybe 25k] as even Michelin starts to see stress failures only after that. I always carry a few cans of gooey sealer/patch kit and awl and they get given away every few years to some unfortunate on the road.

Also replace battery every 3 years or less while under warranty, they always fail the rigorous test it you know how.

I try to change all external bulbs before they fail, easy to examine them and just replace them all every 2-3 years.

The secret is to measure the current with brand new bulbs and monitor it for changes.

Sometimes I go back and forth in my mind...

A 95 G50 with under 100k in agreeable condition can be had for 10k, with enough hard looking. Thats still a nine year old car though. But if youre still driving the same car after 14 years, and I'm willing to spend thousands in less than a year equal to the car's resale value... would I be happy in anything else?

Who knows. Maybe when my workload picks up I won't care anymore.

I'm new to the board here but I'll vouch for the G20 anytime. I went half/half with my parents and picked up a used but pristine G20 without doing much if any research on it at all. I pretty much scoured the classifieds on the basis of finding a vehicle that was reliable, relatively inexpensive, fun-to-drive, comfortable, attractive and practical. The G20 may not have the red-blooded asthetics of its bigger brothers but it's a nice package overall, the shifter has a nice, snappy feel. Despite it's weight, it's adept for flogging around twisty roads too. The one thing I appreciate most about the car is that its relatively anonymous and I really didn't want to fall into the 20-something-urbanite-chic-with-a-Volkswagen stereotype. Give this car a test drive.

Jesda. Like I may or may not have said before, your gonna be stupid to sell your car.... Its so close to being a ROCK SOLID Q....

The Q is super ultra reliable, and yours already has the annyoing stuff done... Lets say you spend 2000 on your rack bushings and guides.... Thats still WAY cheaper than a new car..... Plus the 4 or 5 grand hit your taking from selling the car..... Once your done with those, youll have a solid Q and you probably wont ahve to worry about anything for a long time, besides general maintenance (fluid exchanges, brakes, tires).....

Wheres that service record exel spreadsheet you had.... I never looked at it and I wanna see it...

I can't effin' believe you are not considering a J30! They are the best bang for your buck in the automotive world. You should know all about them by now. Seriously, for $6k + $2k maintanance = $8k you have a car that is a league ahead of anything you've talked about and you've saved $2k to boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost any well-maintained 94-01 Infiniti product is a great value for the dollar.

Keep in mind that so much of the stuff we do to our cars is because we want them to remain "as new" - We could just as easily ignore the little things (thousands of satisfied owners do). Doing the things we do is part of being an enthusiast or a purist - It's not for everybody.

If I am travelling across the country, my first choice is one of my well maintained Q45s. Reliability, handling, comfort and passing power that is all first class.

I guess that is obvious, but evidently not to everyone.

Man I always wanted one of those. I had a 94 V8 T-Bird that I absolutely loved but unfortunately it was a lemon and I got sick of pumping money into it.

Well Brian, thats true.

My second-favorite road trip so far was in a 1995 Mazda 626 5-spd. Sure, not much power, but handled well, rode smoothly, and had a fantastic stereo (Nakamichi). At that time, it had just under 250,000 miles. That car was -proven-. And despite an oil leak (one quart every 500-1000 miles) everything else seemed like new.

The MPV, during one road trip, let me down big time. It refused to upshift and the AC ceased to be effective. Engine temp was normal. It was 110F and 100% humid outside and I ended up stopping in a tiny little Kansas town. The problem simply went away and never came back (including this past summer), so who knows what the heck was going on.

I took the 92 Q across the country during summer 2003 with a friend (NICO member), and enjoyed it. But not long after my arrival the high pressure PS hose failed. And just prior, I had the water pump, fuel pump, and a pulley fail on me.

No big deal in town, but a royal pain in the middle of nowhere. Normal stuff that could happen on any car, but high mileage has its consequences.

Probably a maintenance issue. New fluids always, flush the old ones, replace aging components.

Used up components will fail on any car. If you don't maintain assiduously, you will pay.

Fords are great as there are millions of willing wrenches across the country. Good luck finding a good one when you need it, which will be soon, based on my experiences.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

I remember a 6700 miles cross country trip in a 92

High speeds, everything worked.

Very enjoyable cars for cross country trips, its what they are made for.

I really like the Q45's. When my G20 was having rough idle issues I drove a 95 Q45 loaner car. The leather seats are plush and the leather seats are sensually soft. My passengers really enjoyed the roominess in the back. Power was plentiful when I needed to pass people up on the freeways. I wasn't used to the snappiness of the engine at all. In my G I'd need to plant my right foot down and downshift to move pass someone, in the Q45 a supple tap of the accelerator would suffice. It's a sexy looking car. It's just far too big for a city dweller like me, far too red-blooded, far too gas-hungry and most of all, far too expensive.

the joys of displacement, it's got more lowend torque and doesn't have to be run up to about 3k to really start pulling good:D

Stop, your killing me!!! :D

You definitely WONT find anything like like a 32 valve V8 racing at 7000 RPM... No other V8 that I know of has that high of a redline, stock......

Speaking of which, I need to get a new picture... She's all shiney right now!!

i can think of some recent nissan V6 and 4 cylinder motors that can't rev to 6900rpm stock. the thing with the VH45 is that it has good low end but has insane top end power, it just keeps pulling (note: JWT pop-charger is really loud at redline, can't even hear my non-stock exhaust over it).

that being said, i want an SR20 powered car, but it has to be turbo. i rode in a turbo 97 200sx SE-R (205 fwhp, 13.2 1/4 mile on crappy tires/stock wheels in 100 degree weather), there's nothing better(worse?) than getting wheelspin at 6000rpm in 1st, shifting to 2nd and still smoking the tires. when you are doing over 40 mph and the front end breaks loose it's pretty scary, at least the car has limited slip.

Yet ANOTHER reason to keep with the Q.... The only other V8 I can think of thats close to it in that era is the northstar, and its like 6300 or something like that.....

Ive heard the expression said where pushrod engines have a powerful grunt and noise, whereas twin cam engines have more of a song to them... So smooth, so effortless, so powerful......

I almost feel bad driving my Q in the city, it WANTS to be on the highway for long trips.....

the gas mileage certainly reflects that, i got 22 mpg on a trip to austin, but my normal mpg is quite a bit below that.

Ahhh I'd give an arm, a leg and maybe my firstborn to be in Lake Havasu right now. Arizona's one of the most beautiful places I've visited. I'd love to take you up on your offer but did the Q45's come with a stick option? Gotta have the stick...shift that is. ;)

Where along the Cape did you live?

Wow! I'd kill to have a beachfront home there. I used to go whale watching around there, we'd see these larger-than-life whales with there mouths exploding with fish. One of the most beautiful and enrichening experiences in my life. :ylsuper

Speaking of P-Town I was going to crack a joke with the words 'ferry', 'ride' and 'canal'. BUT....must....resist....:naughty
