50,000 square feet, occupying a former furniture store in Ballwin MO.

The 50,000 square foot space may look daunting, with a chrome exterior that houses four customer lounges, including a café, children’s game room, wifi “quiet” room and TV lounge, as well as a vehicle service area and a women's boutique — and oh yes, space outdoors for a few hundred Nissan cars.

They hired a model to stand there as a human red carpet.

A women's boutique? WTF? I guess they know their neighborhood well. It's an area populated by white women who like fancy junk.

The timing seems right. Nissan is selling a lot of cars and I'm guessing it was cheap to take over a hard-to-repurpose furniture building. The former West County Nissan location was old, cramped, and drab. There used to be three dealerships at the old location, one Kia and one Cadillac-Pontiac, but both have relocated leaving the old corner empty. Even the McDonald's nearby (which probably derived much of its business from the former dealerships) has closed.

The funny thing is, this Nissan dealer is now more upscale and luxurious than the Lincoln and Cadillac dealerships nearby. You get more amenities owning a $10,000 Versa than an $85,000 Escalade Platinum.

I jsut don't see the point in having a large and fancy dealership. In my mind, the first thing I think is "holy crap, how much does it cost to run the place? How much more am I paying for my car because of that?" A womans botique shop? How much time are people actually spending at a dealership!?

Give me free 4hr old coffee and some old Motortrend magazines to read and I am good.

Maybe if they have a large dealership then it won't matter if their service sucks?

Imagine two coffee shops next to each other. One has new decor, a new awning, elegant lighting, and an inviting facade.

The other looks like it could double as a hardware store.

People will assume that the shinier, nicer looking store offers better products or more professional service. It could be BS, but that's retail. As consumers, we think the same way with department stores, grocery stores, and restaurants, especially in style-conscious upscale suburbs.

But we're buying cars, not dealerships. I'd rather buy a 2012 Juke from boring dealership A so long as it's cheaper than fancy dealership B. Same product sitting in my driveway regardless what the coffee tastes like at its former home.

...maybe I'm not part of their target demographic though.

When did Ballwin start competing with Frontenac for bourgeois supremacy?

Well sure, and people buy groceries, not grocery stores.

The pretty facade brings in the foot traffic. That's the way it is with B&M retail.

Me, I'll drive half way across the country to meet a stranger from Craigslist to buy a car that may or may not get me home.

The latest upper middle class developments in the valley just south of old Ballwin are really nice, bargain-priced for the amount of land and house you get at $350k-$600k.

Forget the dealership, I'd like to play with that model's red carpet... :naughty:
