Do you believe the graduated driver's license guidelines are a good idea? Are you affected by them? The article discusses some possibilities as to why kids are waiting to drive... fewer driver's ed courses, high fees, high fuel prices, and high insurance costs....If you were a parent, would you let your 16 year old get his/her license? The article also provides a startling statistic. Since the inception of GDLs, the fatality-rate of motor-vehicular deaths for 16 year olds has dropped 44%. If you were a parent, would you let your 16 year old get his/her license?

Your thought?

I'm going to force my kids to get driver's license's. I sure as hell don't wanna drive their asses around to whatever they need to go to when they can drive themselves. Get them an old nissan or toyota and they are good to go.

Driving is a door to a whole new world imo. When I got my license and could drive on my own, my daily life changed COMPLETELY.

We have kind of that kind of GDL thing in Scottsdale. There's a limit to passengers until 16 1/2 and a curfew until 17 or 18, I can't remember. That being said, I've been pulled over many times (no tickets :D ) and have had passengers in my car, and been past curfew and the cops could care less. But I was polite and very respectful so maybe that had something to do with it.

What I think should be put in place is a more strict driving test. Mine (which I aced) consisted of doing an untimed 3 point turn, and then proceeding to drive around the DMV making four left turns before parking back at the DMV, lol. It was a joke.

i didn't get my license til 18 and didn't get a car til 19. i procrastinated 3 years.

In relation to this. i'm with tyler. get them something manageable, and if you're also paying for gas, give them a gas allowance such as maybe 20 bucks weekly.

Pfft. My kids will pay for their own gas. They will have jobs. This is, of course, if I ever have kids haha.

Lol, I burn through $20 in gas in like 3 or 4 days. I toss them bills at her like it's Tyler's sister! :chuckle:

But I pay for it myself. I think if you're old enough to drive, you're old enough to get a job.

i'd give my kids gas money......to alleviate the money they lose helping with the bills. Yes....i'll force them to contribute to bills. I'll take the persona of the father from "everybody hates chris" to a whole new level. the bills will be divided by usage.

As long as it means they're not bugging me for rides, i'll give them some gas money.

I know it's a bit hypocritical of me to say this...but looking back on my misadventures and tribulations since getting my learner's permit at 15...I say hell yeah to an 18 year old minimum for being able to drive by yourself. I think the learner's permit should be extended at least a year, if not two. I also heavily support increased registration fees and an improved testing regimen. Something needs to be done...every time I get in my car I see retarded attempts at "driving" by fellow motorists.

Yea, the government needs more of my f*** money. As if I don't give them enough as it is. Oh wait, I forgot I'm picking up the slack for the 47% of Americans who DON'T PAY INCOME TAX!

My son just got his license on the first shot, before he turned 17. I was surprised that so many of his classmates flunked such an easy test at least once. I share every parent's concern about the high risk of his driving at that age, especially with passengers. So we've restricted his driving to driving alone or with family members for the first few months until he gets more comfortable behind the wheel.

He's got a good head on his shoulders so I'm not worried about his doing something really stupid like Nala. (ie. Showing off in his school parking lot, losing control, totalling his car plus another one).

I really don't have that much issue with graduated licenses for teens under 18. I know many high school males will take issue, and claim they are great drivers despite no real driving experience. But the sad fact is that as an age group, 16-18 yr old males cause more accidents than any other demographic.

Flame away.

While this is a very valid point, you unfortunately cannot shelter them and protect them from this forever. Given the affinity that both you and Greg have for cars, I don't have much doubt that you can instruct them on how to drive well. I have found that most enthusiasts tend to be better drivers, but I think that has something to do with understand how the car functions and therefore its limitations. I guess all you can hope for is that they will learn enough from the two of you to make them good enough defensive drivers to be able to handle said retards.

This. I remember distinctly driver's ed as it was about 10 years ago for me. How people were struggling was beyond me. Then again, I believe I have amazing parents who taught me well even before I started the course and got my permit (I am definitely biased, but I still believe this to be true). Instruction probably started when I was about 12 on road trips when I couldn't sleep.

In high school I would've been one of those males. In retrospect, my perception was skewed. I thought I was one of the best drivers out there, but really that was probably more true when compared to my fellow 16-18 year old males. I still say that I was probably a better drive than average at 16 (again, totally biased so disregard if you want), but with all the morons on the roads now, graduated licensing might not be a terrible idea. I normally don't like infringing on people, but in this case those people are already putting me at risk. So I'd gladly stomp on their rights and privileges because I somewhat enjoy living.

I am for it. I have seen too many people who cannot operate their vehicles. Just because you didn't crash that Ford Festiva during the test doesn't mean you can handle an Escalade. If you can demonstrate proficiency, fine. If not, here's the keys to your Kia.

Wow, Seeing driver ed classing disappearing is kinda of a scary thought. It really does help the driving in a lot of people, and people at suck at driving is what we need less of here in Florida. I remember when I used to be squad leader for my class, only was for people to improve was actually doing it. It was really a god sent to the kids who parents where working all the time and didn't have time practice with them.

The frontal lobe for some people is sometimes not fully developed until age 35. So based on that science, we should ban people from driving alone until the age of 38.

No drinking until 55.

No guns until 70.

No sex until 80. *puke*

Just lock everyone up in a cage until gray hairs start growing out of their nostrils. Problem solved.

i failed the written test once, then retook it on the spot and passed. barely studied. did excellent on the driving test, but the instructor took away a bunch of points because i didn't remember to use my indicators when reversing. that's the only thing that went wrong with my driving test. Darn butch-woman.

I don't really encounter any kids doing stupid stuff of horrible driving on the road, so i won't give them any flack about that. it's usually the people around my age and older doing the stupid stuff or just driving terribly. I myself have two styles of driving. Cruising and "Move you tards, you're causing unnecessary traffic". In the latter, i tend to speed and do a teeny bit of traffic weaving. not enough to tick anyone off though.

Like the 80 year olds out there with the reflexes of a drunk snail are the ones that worry me.

As far as my own kids though, I would like for them to get their licenses at 16, BUT if they want our cars (my daughter is keeping my wifes Scion TC and my son is getting my car) the only thing I require from them is good grades and for them to have a job.

IT sucks. we have it in MD. 18 months after you get your "provisional" you get your full license. If you get a ticket on your provisional then you start the 18 months over again. I started my 18 moths over twice for two trivial speeding tickets. Its just a way to make more money, I don't see how it could be useful in any way.

Well, If it took two provisional extensions to get you to finally slow down, perhaps the provisional rule works. j/k

I feel ya there, back when i had my g20 i had it cammed to all hell with an exhaust and intake on it and some doucher cop pulled me over because i had taken the motor up to 5k(which was the middle of my powerband,8k was when it dropped),and then shifted,he thought i was racing an (probably) 80 year old man in a ford focus wagon. gave me a 12 point ticket for nothing,i was doing 45 in a 40,he told me i was doing 60 in a 40 :bs:

On the subject of licensing i have my own system i think we should implement for the highway.I'll do my best to explain this. There's three types of licenses, class a,class b,class c. Class a means your restricted to the right lane only and doing 65,class b you can be in the middle lane or the right lane if you choose but have a speed limit of 80 , and a class c license means you can be in any lane you choose and are restricted to 100.If lets say a class a gets caught in a class b lane it's a $1000 dollar fine and a mandatory 6 months without a license and it doubles if a class a is caught in a class c license lane.

My girlfriend gives me s*** for that idea but i tell her it's a damn good way to keep retards outta the way of people that are capable or handling speeds in excess of 100,I'm a two style driver as well a cruiser, and a if you don't get the f*** outta my i will put the front of my jeep right in your rear view mirror and make you s*** your pants as my stinger bumper and winch threaten to decapitate you if you even think about brake checking me.people that get in the left lane and run the speed limit need to die, there is a reason it's there retards and it's for me to pass your speed inept a**.I've got things to do today and it doesn't involve getting stuck behind your stupid a** and then flipping me off as i pass you in the right lane because the right lane is going faster than you.Douchebag.
