I have the Pioneer AVIC S1 that I use in mine. They came out with the AVIC S2 earlier in the year to replace the S1.

I honestly put off buying one for years, thinking that I would buy a built in double-din head unit - and having both would be a waste. That was a big mistake... these things are wonderful! Also, once you have one you will take it with you when you fly and rent cars, drive someone else's car in an unfamiliar area, etc. For my work, I frequently leave my house and drive by several houses to take pictures... the biggest complaint is that I can't put all of the addresses in and have it optimize the route. If I tell it to go from point a to point b it figures it out fine - so I typically have to figure out the order of the addresses before I leave.

The Pioneer has a Bluetooth speakerphone function that is a little quirky, but works very well for the most part. The Bluetooth ability was my reason for choosing it over the others that were available last year at this time in the same price range.

I think you should absolutely get one!

Yeah. I want to get a Double Din touch screen Nav unit. That's something I'll think about getting come sumer after my engine work is done.

That would definitely be the way to go. I wish I could do that. It'd make for a much cleaner look. I've always wanted to get rid of the Bose system and go with a custom install but I know that I would need to spend serious money on that, and the $ that I have allocated is nowhere near what it would take.

Kind of what I was touching on... don't put it off for the double-din that you're going to do in 6 months or a year. These portable units are cool enough and cheap enough now that you will be glad you bought one. Even if you get the double-din unit later, you will still want the portable for other cars, rentals, etc...

Yup,

I can't see spending thousands of $ for a system. Maybe in my 20s I would have done it....I don't know...... Now I have a budget and it's not $4,500.

I'm gonna get the ipod adapter that "qsiguy" makes, option #2, then I will have Larry from Microtech repair/rebuild the bose amps/speakers all around and finally get one of these and call it a day. This will cost around $675.

Heath you're right. It should be good for my roadster and for out of town rentals etc.

I cant stand the look of all the current electronic add-ons you now see in many peoples cars- MP3 players with funky brackets on windsheilds or dash, same with GPS units and their brackets...and wires and power adaptors junking up the clean looks of the dash-lets not even add the radar detectors and cell phones and their wires and adaptors to the mix-holy cow aftermarket overload!!!!

I will give you that... the Pioneer doesn't have great battery life, so I always seem to have the adaptor draped over the steering column. My V1 is hard wired with the concealed display, so it's nicely integrated, but I haven't figured out how to do a better job with the GPS. Eventually I want to upgrade to a double-din head unit, but the $1000 keeps getting used for something else

I'm using the smaller version, (3100), of the one you posted and it works pretty good. But I'm still sorting out mounting/powering it in a less intrusive manner than suction cupped to my windshield.

I also have my V1 hardwired-put the direct wire box with the 2 power jacks inside cavity between sunvisor and sunroof switch panel, wired into sunroof motor lead-4" v1 lead comes out back-side of mirror stalk, just long enough to mount v1 to windsheild above mirror-flip down small visor conceals v1 completely while parked short term or while driving thru Va.Concealed display is perfect size to mount in ashtray, and when ashtray is closed, hidden from prying eyes.

This one

is the one I wanted at first. But no GPS you need an external unit which brings the total some to well over 1 grand, plus extra trunk space. Clarion is decent stuff.

Then this one

recently made available thru Costco for $1k and $945 on ebay with internal navi.

This is how it could look without any custom install

But this is how I would like it to look.

I would also like to sound deaden the whole car with dynamat extreme or even Cascade stuff, or maybe the stuff they use for the Maybach cabin which I believe comes from NASA and aerospace grade raw materials which make the cabin VERY quiet........... At this point I'm just daydreaming but I know I don't have a clue how I'm going to proceed. I know I must stay within by budget.

Get a cell phone with GPS. The data will be more up to date and some offer live traffic.

Even Verizon's VZ Navigator (Which I Love) occasionally encounters dead spots which renders it useless. And it just doesn't look as cool as a double din touch screen.
