Guys, my wife wants me to pick out a GPS for my new Rogue for Father's day. How do you guys have yours mounted? On the windshield? On the dash?

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm getting the Garmin 4.5 screen with text to speech and navtech ect....

Hi,

Well, there are 3 main options:

1. Dash disk2. Suction cup to the glass3. Friction pad

We use No. 3. Number one I am told will damage your dash in the long run and is a pain to take off when you sell/return your lease. Number 2 is probably used by the vast majority and comes free with your Garmin. I have found that it will fall off once in a while. I also find it annoying and "see" it all the time since its basically mounted in your field of vision. The friction pad is lower and will not move at all in turns/hills/etc. I also like the fact that the wires are not hanging down in front of your fase, but on the dash and down to the power outlet. Its an extra 20$ or so to get one. You can get them on amazon.com This is the one we have.

Good luck

I bet you could use a Panavise or Brodit/ProClip or similar device mount as well.

Howdy RogueGuy45, Well... if its a Fathers day gift... and your wife is in a loving mood... ... why not take it to the next level? Introduce her to the 4th Option!

4) In the Dash

Granted, the 4th option is not for the stand alone units like the Garmin you are considering... but its a sweet alternative!

Roombaguy, I want to thank you for the advice. I did purchase the friction pad as it was on sale for $15.00 (normally $39.00 at Best Buy OUCH!) I really like the way it looks, it sits in the middle right over the two vents.

And Elton, that is a sweet set up. That must be your stereo and all right? If I had the cash my man, that would be it.

Well... the Carputer is actually a term used to describe a general purpose computing platform installed in a vehicle. Originally only in the realm of the pc/geek/hobbiest you can now get them from several manufacturers. Some are touch screen, some have motorized pop-out displays etc. The more bells and whistles... the more they cost. You can get a general idea of pricing by looking at the 6 pages of this Google Product search page:

For in-dash receiver/Navigation systems Crutchfield.com is a good place to get an idea on pricing:

Two weeks ago Chrutchfield had some Kenwood Factory Refurbished 5120's with original warranty for only $589!... but I see they're all gone now.

I WISH!!! Actually I plan on going the in-dash route eventually (not only for the GPS but for the backup camera)... but... I need to do a little more convincing with my wife

The photos of the Carputer install belong to forum member hugenius79. You can check out his entire installation and setup here: zerothread?id=392413

And the Kenwwood setup photos belong to kots. Here's a link to his installtion thread:zerothread/334654

I have my GPS mounted in front of the 12 volt power outlet. I just removed the outlet cover and stuck my holder over it. I also hard wired the cord to the fuse box. Sorry NO pic.

I think the spot right in the middle of the dash is perfect (above the two center vents).

A 4.3" GPS there has absolutely no impact on your view through the windshield (assuming my height and seat adjustment). I haven't found the final position or anchor for mine yet, and I'm guessing with those giant friction pads made by garmin that the view will be partly obstructed.
