Well I did get the antenna replaced and it made absolutely no difference. Does anybody know if there is a mechanism to kick this problem upstairs at Infiniti?
P. S. I think it's funny that the spell-checker thinks "Infiniti" is misspelled.
Later: The GPS reception problem is caused by a directional antenna pattern. Obviously, any antenna on a moving vehicle should be omnidirectional, but this GPS antenna is not. You can show this, on your 2008 M, by driving in a very slow circle in an empty parking lot with an unobstructed view of the sky. Take at least 5 minutes to go around a circle, and you will see that the GPS constellation comes and goes. As you repeat the circle the constellation comes and goes at exactly the same compass points. You can turn slowly through a region of pickup, then lose the signal. Then you can backup up through the same region and pickup the signal again.
Another experiment shows that the view of the antenna through the windshield is very narrow. Use a an aluminized-mylar-coated sunshield. Park the car in a direction where you get good pickup. Put the sunshield in the window and the signal goes away. Put the sunshield in the left side window and the signal is good. Put it in the right side windshield and it goes away. Keep folding the windshield back on itself, and pushing it back towards the right side until the signal returns, when you have uncovered the windshield at about 45 degrees right. Now fold up the sunshield as small as you can and slide it slowly across the windshield, from right to left. At 45 degrees right, you will block the signal. Any other position and the signal is unblocked. So the pickup pattern of the antenna is confined to a small sector at 45 degrees right of the car direction.
No wonder it works so poorly. As you turn the car while driving, your pickup pattern keeps aiming at empty sections of the sky. From the information I found on the Edmunds website, moving the antenna makes perfect sense. I can't believe that those sandbagging worthless SOBs at Infiniti don't have fix for this crap.
Later: I took the top ventilator grill off, and the antenna is in there, on the right side near the windshield. When you hold the folded-up aluminized sunshield in front of this spot, the GPS constellation is lost. This is only a small sector of the 4-pi steradian solid sphere ( I know, half of it is below the horizon). However, this is the extent of the pickup pattern of the antenna. I will have to do further disassembly to see if it is feasible to move the antenna to the left side of the top ventilator, where I see a spot for it to go.
