no need for a new ecu just to remove the speed limiter, it's actually a quick an easy mod. well i seeing as i don't know what year and model your car is i'm going to just give you general instructions for a 91-93 (more then likely it works on other years/models). first off you might have noticed that the speed limiter is not actually based on speed. try putting your car into fifth with the clutch to the floor and rev the engine, won't go past 5000 rpms huh? the ecu is fed a signal by sensors on your transmission letting it know what gear your in and how many rpms your at, there 5 or so electrical connectors on the manual transmission casing, you need to disconnect the 2 connectors for the 4th and 5th gear sensors, if i remember correctly it's the two furthest to the rear of the car (if anyone with a Factory Service Manual could confirm this that'd be great, my chiltons is absolutely useless). now again get in the car, clutch to the floor, in 5th gear, rev it. if it goes beyond 5000 rpms you've done it. jump on the interstate and test it out. if i've missed anything or made a mistake then please post the correction so that people aren't misinformed. good luck

GroundZero, have you tried this yourself? First, I know you have to disconnect the speed sensor as well - 240s have both rev and speed limiters, the latter kicks in at 115mph. Ive also heard that on S13s (<1993), if you disconnect the 4th and 5th gear sensors, the computer cuts the engine out when you try 4th or 5th. Oh, I just swapped my clutch, but left the engine speed sensor unplugged (reads the flywheel speed) - the car wouldnt start. By all means try unplugging the sensors if you want (they are the last two on the transmission), but know that it might screw you up royally. Try it on a quiet back road before you hit the interstate.

haven't tried it myself, i got it off of 240sx.org if i remember correctly. if that is the case then the only way to get rid of the govenor would be a remapped ecu or an HKS SLD (Speed Limit Defencer) if they make one for our cars. i did plan on disconnecting 4th and 5th gear sensors once i've turbo charged my ka so i guess whenever i get everything done i'll post if the govener was succesfully bypassed on my 91.

What about that trick where you cut the wire thats physically on your ECU

that'd be the same as unplugging the sensor except cutting a wire is harder to reverse

If you remove the sensor you dont get a speed reading at all. I cut the wire (today actually) and it worked fine then I hit the 5th gear rev limiter.

It's as easy as soldering the line back together. If you crimp a connector you probably wont be able to get the plastic cover back on.

I'm going to try the 5th gear sensor removal and see what I get.

Just removed the 5th gear switch sensor from the transmission. I still dont know why someone said the car wouldnt start. There is no logic in that at all. I pulled to 122mph (speedo reading). The rev limiter came on at 117 before that. I just taped up the connectors so no water or dirt would get in them. I need more HP now! SR20DET here I come.

Oh yeah.. 92' 240SX.

exactly--I don't mind soldering the wire back together should I need to. And I would like to have a speed and rpm reading...yeah that would be what my cluster is for...fark the ECU though...what it doesn't know won't hurt it

Zero-S,

Damn straight. Rolling around without a tach or speedo is so half-***. Good thing for the S13's. Don't know about this working on the S14's though. :ylsuper

ok so let me shoot at this: to bypass the speedlimiter, cut a wire? which one? is it the one on 240sx.org faqs (the 8th wire down on the left #32 in the comp) i dont really get that, can someone pls verify that. also, u will lose ur speedo readings? if it doesnt, cant u just get the 180mph speedo? if u cut A WIRE, putting a switch on it seems rational. ive been reading all of this but it doesnt really show a step by step to it. so pls help this sooper noob. flame n burn by all means.

also, wut differential oil should i use? the grade rating thing.

I cut the speed sensor wire on my 93 and I have yet to hit a speed limiter and rev limiter. I was told on the 93 auto fastback that it is at 7100 rpms, is this true or false? I have had car up to 140, I know this cause I went side by side with my buddys 93 z28 his speedo goes to 175, and I stayed right by his side, I was only like at 5500 rpms, still plenty of pedal and power left. I do have lots of mods dont know if that would make difference of top speed or not. The only reason I stopped was My tires were not really in good shape to try to go faster. Any opions?

I'm running a ka24de. I hate being limited to 112 MPH before cut out. 5-speed transmission. Where are these sensors located at again? Tweaking is soo much fun :)

I cut the eight wire also, but because of a previous problem of the fuel cutting on me in the top three gears I havent been able to test it out yet. I still get an actual speed reading though. the wire is the eighth on my 1989 sohc also.
