Good luck with the implant(s). I know a couple of people that have had phenomenal luck with cochlear implants. Is the ABI implant similar?

Kind of. The cochlear implant is for those whose hearing nerve is still "alive", the ABI is for those like, myself, whose hearing nerve will "die" once the tumor is removed. The abi completely bypasses the nerve and directly stimulates the nerve at the brainstem. From my understanding, the ABI consists of a small "microphone" that is placed in the inner ear, and a small electrical device (box) is under the skin. When sound is picked up from the "microphone" it travels to the "box" from hear the box is connect to the brain stem via electrodes, and when the sound is sent to the box, it is then sent down the different electrodes (varying sound levels) and directly stimulates the brain

Is this going to be an outpatient procedure or will you be in the hospital awhile?

I hope the implant works for you. :(

You seem pretty positive about it, though. My hearing is a HUGE part of how I enjoy life...I'd be bitching up a storm if I were in your place.

I try to stay positive, Ive been through 6 surgeries, and I always pull through fine. I always think about this......"God won't put anything on my plate, that I cant handle".

Hearing is pretty big for me too, especially with school, I was so pissed when I had to drop out for my hearing problems.

and thanks for the kind words peeps, it means a lot

I'm with MoD. I've got mad respect for your positive attitude. It is definitely impressive. Did you say when the surgery was scheduled for? Just want to know when we should keep you in our thoughts. Again, best of luck!

Good luck man. My ex had some fused bones in her right ear from birth (Dunno which exactly) and was contemplating getting an implant. Same issue with you though in that it could leave her completely deaf.

That sucks. So no surgery then? Is it prohibitively expensive to do on your own? Sorry if that question is too intrusive.

Well currently there is a lawsuit going right now to get them to pay for it.

The surgery will cost upwards of 250k
