Well I got a 1993 240sx today with 130k miles for $2300. It looks like its in good shape, and it runs pretty well... but there is one thing that annoys me a bit...

The smell...

Being a 10 year old car, I don't expect it to smell all fresh and stuff... but it just smells bad. It smells like it's been in the sun for those ten years. Not to mention, the previous owner was a smoker.

Soo.... What can I do to make it smell fresher? Is it possible to return that new car smell? Help me out here..:help

Thanks a lot...

yes there is. Get a clean air machine. They are called Alpine Flair's. They are air purification systems for your house. It keeps your house smelling fresh by adding ozone to the air. But I put it in cars that have been smoked in for yrs. Put the battery on trickle charge, turn the car fan on low and plug in the Alpine and put in car. Leave over night. You will never smell smoke again in it.. These are on the pricey side. But I will assure you they will pay for themselves yr after yr. Not to mention they will keep you healthier in your house...

i work at a detailing place, and of course no one is allowed to smoke in my car, but get carpet shampoo, and use the pressure washer at a local do-it-yourself wash place, and vacuum the mats as dry as you can get em, and then let em sit in the sun to dry. Shampoo your carpets too, not just the mats, those u might need an extracter to get dry, but a strong vacuum should do, keep the fan on the carpet for extra dryness, and use lots of FEBREEZE

I'm not sure how far you want to go, however when I lived in Texas after the storms, there was alot of water damage, which really smells, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, we would take everything out including the head liner, and steam cleaned, deodorized, allow to dry and if needed do it again. Or until your happy. Then reinstall.

someone else posted on a diff. thread to throw a few bounce sheets under your seat, it'll suck up odor as well as leave your car smelling like fresh out of the dryer laundry!

lol...

ya.. I think I'll need to give the carpet a good washing. I think the main source of the stench is coming from the carpet in the trunk...

..but then again, the smell kinda grows on you... I think I'm starting to like the smell of my car(sorta like how people enjoy the smell of their farts :pface)

lol, still it might make passengers sick, and you dont want them to throw up in there, and depending on what it is, it could even be harmful, id clean it anyhow.
