we got the CA running, at first it would crank but didn't want to turn over so I put 5 gallons of fresh gas in, and changed the spark plugs out, and it cranked right over, but idled like a tractor. I found and fixed some vaccuum leaks and it started idling normally and quietly. We took it for a drive and it just sputtered at anything over like 10% throttle. I unplugged the mafs and plugged it back in and now it runs and drives but its way down on power compared to what I would think it would be... by that I mean it feels like its half as powerful as my ka was, so something isn't right. Once it comes on boost (I have a vaccuum line going straight from compressor to wastegate and it spikes up to 10psi) it is making some decent power, but at low rpm's it just feels like a total dog. I'm thinking the timing, wanted to know if anyone else had any suggestions.thanksandrew

Hi,

Definitely check for vaccum leaks as well as check your intercooler piping to make sure there are no leaks there either.

Check the timing to make sure it is set right, a compression test or leak down test is also a good idea.Run diagnostics on the ecu to see if it is giving you any errors.Did you hook your detonation sensor?. What MAF are you using, is your setup completely stock? if not what mods did you do?

I double checked, I'm almost certain there are no more vaccuum leaks. The weird thing is that the brakes don't feel quite as strong as I think they used to (hard to tell when I just did a brake swap and haven't driven the car in nearly a year) so I was thinking there might be a vaccuum leak and the booster isn't getting all the vaccuum it needs. However, I have checked all my lines and the car is still pulling decent vaccuum... I think my boost gauge measures vaccuum in HG (don't know what that is) but it pulls down past 20-25 during normal driving. I'd think if there was a vaccuum leak it wouldn't be pulling vaccuum like that. I'm going to do the timing here in a second, I have to go buy a timing gun.. I'm not completely sure how to do the diagnostic but I'm sure its in the FSM, so I'll have to check that too. My CA is completely stock except I bypassed the stock boost controller thing and ran the wastegate right off the compressor, and I have a megan racing 02 sensor housing and 3" downpipe (that don't completely match up right, at least not yet).I have the stock side mount piping and intercooler with no bypass valve, and a blitz super stainless micro mesh filter that came with my motorset.

I advanced the timing back to stock, it was down to 5 degrees btdcbut it still feels like it is lacking power in 1st. I dumped the clutch at 3k and it gave me a few revolutions on the rear tires before it bogged. 2nd through 5th it will bang through pretty hard, but is that normal for 1st gear to suck? Its only getting 5 psi in 1st gear too, but I guess thats normal for a turbo car (I read that somewhere). Let me know. Thanks,

andrew

You should see full boost in 1st. Sounds like a leak on the intake manifold to me. What is your idle at, and have you adjusted it at all? There are a few nipples on the manifold and you may not use them all. Look for the ones on the throttle body. I capped one of those off since I didn't need it.

no I located all of them and capped the ones I wasn't using. The only one I didn't cap was the one with no line on it from the factory (the 2nd line from the top on the 4 way metal vac. dist. lines that come underneath the 3rd runner or so on the intake manifold).I read in the faq to leave this open (like it is from the factory on the 5 spds). If this is incorrect then thats an easy fix. I capped the bottom one and ran a line from the top one to the 3rd from the top, as per the faq recommendations. I also capped the line under the throttle body, and I'm running my boost gauge off the line behind the throttle body. All the vaccuum driven equipment behind the engine is hooked up using the stock lines, and the wastegate gets its vaccuum from a hose off the compressor vaccuum outlet.

My car idles at 800 rpm and I did not have to adjust it...during cold starts it runs a little rough and the idle moves around but once it warms up a bit it runs just fine. Like I said, just feels down a bit down on power in 1st. 2nd through 5th hit 7 psi and make a ton of power.

ok once I got her warmed up and slipped the clutch some she was launched pretty well tonight so I guess everything is fine. One more issue, my speedo isn't working at all, its a HUD and it just says 0 mph. I switched to the usdm speed sensor and it still does the same thing. Maybe I'm missing a plug-in somewhere or something??

Well dont forget is a 1.8L its 600 CC less than a KA so its normal that off boost its not a torque monster... you need to change your driving to fit the powerband of the ca .. have fun with it

clip on the #3 coilpack plug was broken, fixed it and swapped my spakplugs out to some good denso ones and its running strong again.
