GPS devices have been using two-way communication since around 2007.

Yeah, I already acknowledged that. If you weren't in such a hurry to track me down and refute everything, maybe you would have read what I said.

Yes. GPS used to operate that way, but since 2007, many have been using the GPRS or cellular abilities they are imbued with now to help find routes and alter them.

GPS devices have been using two-way communication since around 2007.

The Global Positioning System does not use two-way communication. Not since the 1970s, not since 2007. Not ever. It's just not how it works. The satellites don't receive information from end-user GPS devices.

There are devices that broadcast corrected GPS signals, but those are large, and by nature only work when there exact position is known. One of their uses is to aid in GPS approaches to airports. They're known as DGPS reference stations.

Any two-way system build into a GPS capable device is a feature existing outside of GPS functionality.

Update:

Those are not included in the Global Positioning System, and are still extremely rare in non-cellphone navigation systems.

You originally said:
Dattebayo wrote: There has to be some kind of talk back to the satellite from the GPS, otherwise it wouldn't be able to know where you are.
That statement is incorrect and demonstrates a fundamental lack of knowledge of the operation of the Global Positioning System.

See my original comment.

Source me up your magical 2007 GPS transmitter.
Oh, so now we're being specific. It's not enough that GPS devices use another method to communicate and alter routes, huh.

I've seen a lot of older devices lose the travel vector when a sudden turn is made or the route wasn't followed as shown, but the new ones with the extra service keep the vector the whole time! The fact is they do have transmitting abilities now.

Quit being an as$.

Maybe you don't understand me correctly. The GPS doesn't actually know where you are, it made a calculation and guessed, right?
The new devices actually can get your specific location, right?

All systems make guesses based on calculations.

The GPS is the king of consumer-level location. eGPS, aGPS, or any similar system cannot hope to match the accuracy of a good 4-5 satellite GPS lock. We're talking 10-20ft vs 1,000ft. They're useful in supplementing GPS data as in your "travel vector" scenario.

But no, they can't get your specific location.

Yes. I'm shocked no one else picked up on Nala's new "faux hawk" haircut. It's rather disturbing....

Nala, I guess your cherished instant detailer survived your traumatic theft. But did it occur to you that the reason they left your ipod alone was because the music you had on it totally sucked?

I've been told by my 11 year old son that they call that a brohawk in his school. He also says they are lame.

Nala didn't you make a thread about your trunk not locking not too long ago? ever get that fixed? Prolly how they got in.

Also, you really need to read the paper/watch news. There have been TONS of smash of grabs and robberies in all of the Hartford area towns over the past couple of weeks. Did you leave the GPS attachment stuck to your window? Hide your stuff or better yet, take it with you. Thieves watch when you park and see what you put away and/or take with you.

Hah. That's right.

But I suppose his creepy haircut might not be THAT lame if his head did come to a point. :chuckle:

It's not the word "cool" that is at issue, it's his failed attempt in trying to be cool that's facepalm worthy.
