So i got pulled over today for having tinted windows, and the cop wrote me up and wat not and asked me "so you have any engine modifications done to the car?" i looked at him and almost started laughing, but i kept my composure all i said was "i wish they made more aftermarket for this car, all i have is a CAI", and he was like "well lets take a look, y don't you turn the car off and pop the hood" all i said was... "Reeaallly???? ooook..." so turned the car off and opened the hood and he saw my strut bar and intake. he said "so is it connected to the box?" and im thinkin, wtf? a box? i assumed he meant the stock factory airbox. so i just kept it safe and said ya... its connected to the box . he said "ok good because it cant be open filter. it has to have a box in order for it to be legal"

and after that i was on my way. mind you i am in california. but he said if the intake is connected to the box it isn't illegal... connected to the box? do u think he meant the stock factory airbox?

Probably, since he also said it can't be an open filter as well. Good thing the cai hides the cone filter far down so unknowing eyes can't tell where it is...neither can noob cops

I'm still trying to figure out why it matters if the filter is enclosed or not...

Took my bike out for one last ride [reminds me -- time to update the sig] before storing it for winter [Monday -- great timing -- before our storm -- man are the roads icy! but I digress].

Was a coupla hours out of town and came into a hamlet -- remembered that I had one been pulled over and ticketed there because the speed limit goes down really fast so I slowed right down. A minute later I looked in my mirror and some idiot was right on my tail. Thought "Jerk" -- and was about to pull away but then figured there'd be a cop lurking and s/he'd pull me over so I held the speed limit all the way through town. When one lane became two I pulled over to the right lane and held speed; a minute later the jerk [who was still on my tail] pulled around me, turned right at the next intersection, and prepared to turn and drive back through town. You got it -- cop.

Figured he wanted to push me to speed then pull me over.

Jerk.

Um... what the hell is the point of doing something to your car if you have to be super careful because it's illegal? Here's an idea. Tint the car the legal limit. It's cheaper because you don't get expensive tickets for it and you can actually keep your windows up. And because you wanted the car to look cool is a stupid reason to do it. I have my Versa tinted the legal limit and it looks perfectly fine.

I have mine illegally tinted all the way around to 35%. I can't remember what the legal limit is but it isn't so dark that I would draw notice but dark enough to keep the blazing sun out. Cops around here don't care about tint unless they are having a bad day or a rookie cop is trying to get a ticket count.

I've never had legal tint on any of my cars because if you go legal...atleast in Florida...there would be not reason TO tint.

It's not a stupid reason. Many people jump out of perfectly good airplanes for the thrill (me included). People dive 90 feet underwater for the adventure (me included). You don't have to be grumpy about it.

Look man, Im not at all trying to be a jerk at all but Ive seen stuff like this coming from you many times. All I ask is to stop bashing people because they do something to their car. If they want to tint their car illegally to the point where they look out for cops...who the hell cares, its not your car, and its not your business what they do with their car. If they want to drive like that, then who cares, no skin off your bones right? And I repeat, I am truely not trying to be a jerk.

Back on subject, I too have illegal tint But it seems like cops around here dont care, Ive passed cops, Ive waved at them as they slowly pass by me, Ive pulled up next to them at lights and roll my window down to talk to them. And im with you #1Tango, I dont get why not having a box around an intake would be illegal

I guess it all depends on where you are as far as if the cops care.Back in High School in Pensacola, I had a 1500 watt system with 2 12"s in my Bronco. I was boomin' one night at a stop light and a cop pulls up next to me. I quickly turned it down. Then the cops window rolls down and I'm like "aw crap, here comes a excessive noise ticket". Instead, the cop (who was a younger cop) says, "Why'd ya turn it down? I was liking it. If they would allow us I'd put a system in my squad car!". Surprised the hell out of me to say the least.

I think windows tinted passed the legal limit look good, like real good. But I have to go with Mr. Calibur it does sound silly to be on the constant look out for the po-po b/c your tints are too dark, plus doesn't it drop visibility a lot??? I know I drove my friends Xterra and she had 5% all around and I couldnt see $#!%.But then again it does look good, so the trade off here is looks for safety, more tickets and a lower chance of passing your inspection.

The classic tactic of "pull you over for some piss-ant charge then try to add on whatever they can think of". It has nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with profiling, harassment and revenue.

Unless where you were has a municipal "no modifications" ordinance, the cop had no right to fine you for the CAI – except if the CAI is not CARB certified. Also, technically they can not search your vehicle without probable cause. In this case your tinted windows was the excuse. Next time, keep it short, and don't volunteer any additional information. Don't strike up a conversation. Take the bull****, time-waster, fix-it ticket and be on your way. Don't bother trying to make friends, he ain't your buddy.

Be smart. Know your rights!
