so i was drivin home at 2am when i notice a cop following me.....i switch lanes, he switches with me (no other cars on the road).....great, i thought, what could he be following me for?? i had my cruise set on the speed limit, so i wasnt speeding. even though i was really tired, i wasnt swirving. oh well, ill just keep driving. 20 secs later on come his lights and he pulls me over. awesome.....less than a mile from my house, and im getting pulled over. well once i pull over and put my car in park the thought comes to my head....i bet its because my headlights. sure enough when he gets to my car he asks "are those your high beams?" i reply no and he asks for my liscense and registration and says "i think theyre a little too bright", stressing the "little" in that sentence and doing the thumb and first finger motion when you describe something small. great, now im getting a ticket. he returns to my car with a "Maryland Safety Equipment Repair Order" and informs me that if i dont get the headlights fixed and take it to a Maryland State police barrack to get them inspected in 10 days, my registration will be suspended. UGH!!!!

i have 5000k in both my headlights and my fogs, and i know it was probably my fogs that made him pull me over since theyre not even remotely close to being ok to put HIDs in. so do i just swap the fogs with the stock halogen bulbs, or do i swap the headlights and fogs just to be safe??? i dont want to go in there with the 5000k's still in my headlights and have the staties say theyre not ok. the min i get home the HIDs will be going back in anyways. i just wonder if i get pulled over again for the same reason if the penalty will be harsher. i know he was just doing this to piss me off and make it a hassle for me.....a-hole.

lesson for the day kids......for those of you that live in MD.....MoCo police dont like HIDs......for those of you that dont live in MD.....just be safe and stay away...lol

damn that sucks. i want to get 5000k HIDs in my fog lights too, i just have 5000k HIDs in my headlights. i'd leave the fog lights, its the headlights i'd be worried about. maybe try going in with your fog lights turned off and see if they say its too bright. or if your not lazy (unlike me always trying to take the lazy way out lol) disconnect everything and put it back to stock and when you come home just put the HIDs back in. that sucks though. next time im in that situation ill remember to turn off my fog lights (when i get HIDs in the fogs)

yea ill probably just swap all the bulbs for the halogen ones, and swap them back to the HIDs when i get home. i think i can easily get to the headlight bulbs through the wheel wells and i can get to the fogs through the underside of the bumper.....not a big deal for the bulb swap, its just a 2 hour hassle that i have to deal with now.

that sucks!

to be honest, before getting my eibach springs installed on my car, mine 6k low beams were illuminating all the street and highway signs. I mean, there was alot of glare. Ever since I dropped the front of car down 1.5", the 6k low beams seem to focus on the street more and not the signs above.

Besides, in Chicago, the cops are more easy on cars with after HIDs.

What you can do now is leave the 5k hid there and try to lower the low beam to focus more on road. I believe there is the a wheel on each headlight assembly that you can adjust. also put back the halogen bulbs for fogs.

good luck!

it wasnt a ticket.....it was just a repair order

anyways........so i swapped the halogens back in, went to the state police barrack, and all they did was ask me to turn on my headlights, flash my high beams a couple times and that was it......he asked if a trooper issued the repair order and i said no it was a montgomery county cop and he snickered.

all i have to do now is mail in the repair order and waste a stamp.......thanks cops.....42 cents and 2 hours down the drain for me to only come back home to put the HIDs back in.

I live in Maryland too and I have had my 6000k in the lows for about 6 months without any problems.(Knock on Wood). It had to be the fogs that did it. I just switch the H11 Fogs for the much brighter and whiter H9 bulb. Makes a big difference, and shouldn't attract the cops.

The only laws against the headlights are when they are too bright (aka show headlights) - as long as yours are the super bright whites, you're ok...some of the knockoff HID's aren't what they say they are and are actually too bright for road usage..

that's crazy... I always heard that could happen, I guess this shows it's true. I'd usually stick to OEM HID's if at all possible,,, even though the Nissan's aren't projector's so they flipping blow... sorry for the rant... haha

yea im pretty sure he was just pulling me over to check to see if i was drunk and he used my headlights as a reason to pull me over.

and it wasnt a ticket....only a repair order..... the only thing i had to pay was the 42 cents for the stamp to send it back to the county police after i got inspected by the state police.

Thats OD homie, I have 6000K HID headlights and foglights, and they are bright as ever. Im always all over Maryland and never have any problems, so if you dont want to fix them then I would say you will probably not have to worry about that again. Like I said mine are really really bright and I have never had any problems.

Just as long as you dont run into the same cop again which prolly wont happen if you got pulled over leaving an O's game and you live in Silver Spring.

yea it was 2am on a sat when i got pulled over in MoCo less than a mile away from my house.....so theres a chance that i might run into the same cop again, but i dont care.....i think he was bored and just looking for something to do......he even screwed up on the repair order, writing everything on the wrong copy....lol

It's one of the reasons I stuck to 4300K and whenever I've driven behind cops I'm wondering if they're going to pull me over since we all install these things in halogen housing..the beam is all over the place.....but yah I've been safe so far...touch wood.

Goodluck.

I really don't worry about getting pulled over for the low beams given that the OEM Factory HID's are put in the same Headlight housing. If you have alot of glare, you should adjust the height so you don't blind others. Stick to 6000k or below on the lows and you should be fine. Putting Hid's in the lows no doubt look cool and light up the road alot better, but also attracts more attention.

on a side note: is it possible to get tagged accurately by a radar/laser from a cop traveling in the opposite direction?

the factory halogen and HID housings, although the may look the same, are not.

yes.....i got busted by one of those once.....it looks like a mailbox thats attached to the driver side window of the cop car and it can take radar both in front and behind the cop, while hes moving.

I don't think that's accurate... the factory housings for the HID and non HID headlamps are NOT the same... there's supposedly a special coating on the HID housings that prevent the extra glare... this has been discussed and verified by folks that have opened up the headlight housings...
