ok so I had 5000k Xentec slim ballast HIDs before and loved them! after 1.5 years, they burnt out and I went back to stock. now I got some new HIDs. I wanted to get the fat ballast because supposedly the fat ballast ones work with the "Auto" function on our headlights. I only saw 4300k instead of 5000k but the color should be almost the same. I paid $40 with FREE shipping. here are some of the pics I took of the HID kit before I install them

Image

heres everything it came with (plus instructions that arnt in the pic)

Image

here you can see how thick the ballast is compared to the bulb

so far I just did the driver's side. I'm going to do the passenger side in a few min. so far the the "auto" function WORKS!!!! BUT, I'm not happy with the lights. my old ones stayed constant like normal lights. these ones flicker like CRAZY! seems like I'm driving on a stone paved road or something. the light is just flickering like crazy. I'm going to wait until tonite to give my final opinion though. maybe after the lights getting some use, MAYBE they'll work perfect like my old ones.... hopefully.

also, I noticed that the lights give off a lot of heat and that it was centered at this point.... I'm wondering if this will mess up my headlight housing. here is a pic of where the light is centered at

the slim ballast worked perfect for me for 1.5 years, just no auto function. my brother got the slim ballast ones for his mustang and has had no problems at all. this is my first time getting the fat ballast ones and the auto function works but thats about the only think I like about them. you had the same issue with the light bouncing up and down?

hmmm I'm thinking about maybe my ballast could be bad. but its both of them... you said you got 3 bad ballasts. so you had to have had at least 1 good one. did you have any issues with the light looking like its bouncing up and down? this is my 3rd set of Xentec HIDs from ebay and this is the only bad set i've had so far. the other 2 worked perfect from the start... just not the auto function.

Sorry to hear about the repeated misfortune.

I bought my first (and only) set from ddm tuning back when it was like $80. They have since gone down to about $40 now and I believe they have free shipping as well, and if not they have a lifetime warranty which sold it for me even at the higher price. My auto feature works and there was like a two or three day period where my driver side low beam went out, but after the couple days it came back on.

If these fail I would suggest ordering from www.ddmtuning.com

nope. no altima comes standard with them. you get HIDs when you get the premium package and I just have a base 3.5 (many 3.5 owners on here didnt come stock with HIDs).

I had the slim ballast HIDs and they worked perfect from start to finish. with these ones, the light bounces up and down sooo much! the other Xentec HIDs I had, never did that. plus I remember going from stock to HIDs and having a HUGE difference in light output. my old HIDs burnt out after 1.5 years and I went back to stock for a few months and now got these. going from stock non HIDs to these, theirs no difference in light output.... their might even be less light output. so I think something is wrong with them... I messaged the seller on ebay.

I had problems with a couple of the Xentec ballasts too, but I had one that worked pretty good. I thought it was just my car, but then blackteam02 tried them out and they didn't work for her either. Like ms_coupelover said, the flickering would typically stop about 5 minutes after they came on but it looks nasty. I had a relay harness and everything. Don't waste any money trying to fix this!!! I had them send me three more replacement ballasts and apparently none of those worked right either. Cut your losses and get the DDM ones or just put your regular bulbs back in.

I was thinking about experimenting with one of the Xentec ballasts to see if I could find a cheap fix, but I don't have any of those ballasts around anymore.

If you want, PM me the seller name and I'll tell you if it was the same one i dealt with.

BTW, I really like what you did with your Stillen fascia and headlights. Looks awesome!

thanks for the compliments :) about the HIDs, Its not really a flicker (I shouldnt have used that word) it's more like the light bouncing up and down. It sounds weird but its sort of something you have to see in person to know what I'm talking about. the light bounces up and down, their not any brighter then stock (which I've had HIDs before and they should be MUCH brighter then stock), in fact I think I can see farther at night with the regular bulbs. then the color looks sort of greenish. I mean honestly, these lights are nothing like the HIDs I had before.

I guess that is what I meant about the flicker too. So if you're parked maybe 6 feet away from the garage wall, they bounce up and down a couple millimeters. I remember checking to make sure the bulb was actually tight in the socket. Then when you view it head on it kind of flickers a bit. I think it may be due to the DC power source not being completely "clean." I bet if you hooked it up to a bench power supply it would work great.

Not sure about the brightness or the color being off.

One thing I really like about the slim ballasts is that I was able to secure them to the underside of that top headlight mount with 3M tape and a couple black zip ties. No messing around with the bumper at all!! :)

Not the same seller I used, but definitely the same kit. It's too bad that you are having problems with them. See if they will give you a refund and then buy a set of the slim ballasts. Mine, the DDM's, work fine on Auto mode but most of the time I leave them on off so they don't turn on in the garage and then off after I'm out of the garage. I wish the stalk went Auto, Off, Parking, On instead of Off, Auto, Parking, On or whatever it is

hmm I have the slim ballast the auto function always worked. I did have two of them blow out of me in like a years time though. I had ones in my fogs so it wassnt such a hassle. Next time one breaks I'm going to get a better brand.

Be careful those cheap s*** will burn/melt the wires and even the plastic in your light area because they run so hot( I've heard stories from a bunch performance shops around my area about this happening)........ I would spend extra get good ones

I just installed my DDM set yesterday. Only issue I had was the reversed polarity on the harness, easily fixed by flipping the ballast connection. No other issues, work great, very high light output. Recommended....

I know exactly what you mean by bounce. If you are sitting behind a car with your headlights on their rear bumper the top line of light will "bounce" up illuminating an area that wasn't illuminated before. I have a similar problem with my Xentecs. I also have the thicker ballasts and they work fine on auto however ever since I installed the wiring relay they don't flicker at all. Before I had the relay they flickered a lot, especially in the cold weather. I dunno if they have to warm up or what. The bouncing only happens with my passenger side headlight though. Not the drivers side which is closest to the battery. I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. I have already had to replace a ballast after only 3 months, and I just did that a week ago. Now I have this "bouncing" issue with the pass. headlight. I really don't feel like messing with them again as I have to take my whole stillen bumper off to get access to them.

NOPE! you dont have to take off the fascia. turn the wheel to the side and perfect acess through the wheel well. took me 5-10 min to take off my HIDs and put in the regular bulbs....

both of my lights have the bouncing affect. my dad contacted the seller (since we used his ebay account) and I'm going to see whats going on because I've been busy the past couple days.

UPDATE:

ok so the seller sent me another set of HIDs. these ones are MUCH better! they're 10 times brighter then the other set he sent me. at first I didnt see any bouncing affect or anything but after looking at it REALLY CLOSELY I could see a little jiggle but I mean, you really have to look for it. so I think thats the jiggle affect people were talking about and said that it goes away. I'm pretty happy with them now. If they burn out in like a year, then i'll go buy some DDM tuning ones
