Ok here goes.
All newer Radeon cards are based on the same GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) which means that they are all the same "brain". The 9600 is a "detuned" 9700 NP (non pro) The process declocks the onboard RAM and makes the card run slower. By updating the BIOS and the drivers, you can "soft hack" the card, effectivley making it perform as a higher spec card. SO you pay $x for the "lesser" card, but in reality you can make it perform jsut as well as the bigger and badder.
Since you have a 9600, you can crack and clock that bad boy for optiomum performance! Now, make sure your fans are up to the task and that you have enough voltage running to your AGP slot. ATi calls for 1.7V for the 9700 Pro, but if your board dosen't allow you to change voltage settings, then you are forced to use a jumper to provide the extra power. The problem with that is you are not getting a stable power supply, and you can get hiccups (don't ask me how I know this). Have fun!
Here is a good forum for you to brose through on how to do all of this, and has lots of in depth info on what you will be actually doing.
