i don't trust rotary motors for dependability. did that year of rx7 come with one?? Congrats on the new car though regardless.

yeah, all rx7 have rotaries, heb=nce the R in RX7, stands for rotary if you arnt paying any attention. they are the best small engines you can run. they are very strong and can run very very long, and with just a simple header and free flowing exhaust you can give them about 20hp. rotaries like breathing, more so then piston engines. i have an 88 rx7, the interior is sh*t, but i can race and beat any ricer, or modestly moded car on the road, and all ive done is bigger injectors, exhaust and headers. very fast and very fun to drive, handdles better out of the box then any other car on the road, i promiss. not even the surefootedness of the 240 can touch this beast of a mini sports car. RX7 is the way to go for any sort of scc raceing or just plain old drag, even with smaller hp ratings, under 200, you can pull easaly 13's at the track. mine runs best 13.4. and im only running 180hp, stock trany and stret tires. yes they are very fast, the problem is finding cheap parts. bc they arnt raced alot you need to do some searching. ebay has become my second home. so if anyone is looking for a sweet ride and very little cast and fast #'s with little power i would say RX7 all the way

dude i dont know what the hell sprstu is talking about unless hes driving a TII then there is no way hes pulling 13.4's with exaust and headers, i don't think a N/A RX-7 has broken the 14.99 barrier yet. I have a 87 N/A RX-7 and its slow probly runs like mid 16's but its fun as hell handles ****ing awsome comes stock with a helical LSD. The 85 unless you got a GSL-SE you have the 12A motor which was smaller than the 13B and carburated. They are pretty slow but can be built up to be pretty quick. I like my RX-7 its fun.

The fact that not to many people work on those motors will cost you in repairs. They are great if you know someone who can work on it,so you should try and locate that person in your area ASAP.Good Luck with your new toy.;)

you CAN do some minor stuff to them to make them last longer. they dont like to stop revving, and they will keep going till they explode. the main reason Mazda had so many problems is they didnt get enough fuel. make sure you have bigger injectors and a bigger fuel pump. get 3mm seals. if you dont do the regular maintenance, which is like every 3000 miles, it costs $6000 for an over haul or engine rebuild. rotaries can be very powerful motors for the size. on the velocity racing site, they have one guy pushing 540hp to the rear wheels on a 2nd gen. two words for you, bridge-porting. anyways, good luck with your new toy.

my ex-roomate had an 87 and it was in excellent condition when he bought it. but h etried modding a few things then it was just problem after problem till he blew his engine. never could find anyone to repair it around here so he sold the car. it is a bad a$$ car, but if you dont know what you're doing you're screwed.

I have a 79 just for kicks, it dosent run either (needs fuel tank), and looks like ****. I belive even if it is not the GSL-SE it will have the 12a, but should be fuel injected (also the 12a has thicker apex seals witch should be better for more boost). i belive they only had carbs on the 79-80, maybe 81. I was really looking forward to setting up mine setup for drag, but i dont want to bost with carb, and it cost to much to switch to EFI so i think i am just going to make it look kinda nice, and have it as a second get around car.

i heard the N/A RX-7's are extremely reliable, forced induction is what makes them notorious, because the rotary can't handle heat so well. I have no experience though, so correct me if I'm wrong.

If I had all the $$$ in the world I'd take a rex in a heartbeat. Rotary motors are really cool and much more advanced than a piston engine. They are very simple and have only 3-4 moving parts. Unfortunaly they have a high level of thermal friction and that is why they don't handle boost well. They have alot of surface area and when it gets heated up in a boosted situation, sometimes the metal just can't handle it. But definatly VERY cool cars. And what about that new RX8 coming out this year. If only I was rich.....
