I got my swap set in the other day, and it all looks good (at least what I expected) but the motor is so dirty and looks like it has been sitting, so I am going to have a shop do some work to it before it goes in the car.
First of all, I removed everything I didn't need at all for my swap from the motor. Then I removed the alternator and the turbo and exhuast manifolds. All smooth so far...but taking off the intake as one hole piece took the better part of two hours with a couple of very small wrenches. But its all apart now!

So, onto the major issues...Everything on the outside of the block designed to carry vacuum, water or oil to anywhere seems to be missing or damaged. My biggest concern around this is the water lines. I am running a dry sump system, and will only need to remove the oem oil pump to gut it and find a way to make oil route through it to the block. So anything oiling related, I plan on prettying up with the same kinds of lines I end up using for the pump and scavenge lines. The ca also seems very well suited to being dry sumped and I think it may help out with some the oiling problems I have seen and heard of on here.
Back on topic: The water nipple exiting near the thermostat and water pump is nearly corroded through right at the base. Is this a piece I can find? I see how I might be able to fab one from copper, but a stainless piece would be nice. Does this nipple thread in? There was a tee connected to that same nipple that was busted also, and all of the lines around the back of the motor are crinkled and corroded. I wanted to find a whole new set of these parts if possible. Not using the heater core either, so some may be unnecessary.
Another essential piece is the nipple that leads into the throttle body with coolant. I assume this tells the motor whether it needs to idle for a cold or warm motor? That nipple is broken off VERY close to the tb. There are a few other parts I will want too.
In conclusion, I plan to take the block to a shop in the next week or so and have it disassembled and looked over real good. I have a list of tolerances for them to use, and for now I will have them just clean it and return it to oem condition. I need to source a good set of parts that they will certainly need, and find some things and be ready to buy should they be needed, i.e. pistons, rods, crank, etc. but I definitely need a gasket set. Should I just hit up somewhere like autozone for a ca18de rebuild?
