The car is a 1984 300zx, The history behind the car is that it was my good friends for almost a year, he traded a honda civic with a b16 swap (motor blew) for the car. It runs and drives great I was surprised with the ride quality on my test drive.

How I got it- He calls me two days ago, and tells me he's selling his car, and for ridiculously cheap ($300), I tell him he HAS to sell the car to me instead. I was always enthusiastic about it and he knew. I didn't think he would, but he calls me yesterday morning and says come get it that it's mine. It sat for 6 months in his drive way, on jack stands with a tire popped in the rear. All i had to do was buy a tire and it was mine to take home for the small fee of 350 dollars. I couldn't believe it.

About the car- Original classic red paint job with peeling clear coat, 134k original miles. A lot of bondo and fiberglass patching small rust spots. We previously ripped out the top of the dash because it was cracked really bad, also exhaust leaks terribly from where me and him cut off the Cat converter and I amateurishly welded the ends together. The radio is gone, gutted, and I don't think the 12v works. Other than that, the engine purrs and the clutch has some room left.

My Plans-
Since I've had the car for about a day now, all I've done is research. Thanks to this forum I know a little more about the car and engine. I know how I want the car to look and what my approach will be. Full tune up with a new exhaust is first in line. Radio is a big priority of mine, I have a lot of experience with electrical and it looks like all the harness is left from the old radio so I can wire in my after market one and get some nice speakers to replace the ones that probably don't work anymore. Cosmetics are down the road, will do paint and a set of wheels. I want to turn her into a nice, clean daily that I can feel good driving in while looking good doing it.

Thanks for reading, I look forward to my time on the forum getting to know people and their Z's.

Welcome to Nico!
I myself owned one of the older Z31's such as this, but this is the Z32 site so you may not get as much attention and "love" as you might like and so I'd suggest you post up on the classic Z site where you will find similar cars and information on it that we have here for the Z32.
They have a classified section and access to some vendors and are specific to the older cars, and many of the guys there post up their projects and other information as well.
Good Luck with your Z!

Welcome to Nico, You're int he right place now. My first Z car was an n/a z31 as well. There are a few very knowledgeable Z31 enthusiasts that frequent this section and are generally happy to help. For $300 it's hard to go wrong. What are you plans for the car? Restoration? Drag? Autocross? Track rat? Demo derby?(that one was a joke)

I think right now my plans are to get it running good, get a radio in it and fix the A/C, then daily it until I go to the military. Then complete restore when I can afford it, I was thinking doing a turbo swap, found motors on eBay for under $2000 straight from Japan seems very reasonable.. I recently put a paint job on it, silver metallic with gold fleck. Looks great and it cost under $100 since my buddy had a gallon laying around.
PS. Paint lines are rough, it's still fresh and hasn't been buffed out yet.

If you decide to do a turbo swap, a complete donor is the way to go. These pallet motors from japan often have issues and won't include things you need like the crossmember.

So, Got my first Z has turned into got my second Z.

I was really into the thought of restoring my first Z, but knowing I had some money in the bank I was looking towards a more dailyable Z rather than project Z since I work every day and come home at night can't really work on the car that much and it needed a lot to be comfortable. No a/c in Florida was really brutal.

Anyway, I came across a '85 z31 that was pretty mint with 74k miles. It's an automatic but for the work done on the engine and ice cold a/c I couldn't resist.
Here she is- Dropped 2" on 18" rims, new poly bushings had timing belt, water pump cam seals the whole charade done to it.

The man I bought it from had 2 z31 turbos with the engine's out, one a donor and one he's building for performance pretty much just under a small carport.
This car drives like a dream very glad I bought it, even though it's automatic and I know the transmission's aren't the best.
