Should my car run like crap for the first few times I drive it after I just got hks cams put in? They are the 256/264 in an s14 sr20det. I also had rocker arm stoppers installed at the same time. It also sounded like it was missing the first few times I drove it. It feels like its smoothing out though. Each time I drive it, it gets a little better. Any Ideas?

I dunno, but lemme know how it turns out. That's the cam setup I was planning on going with on my S14 SR.

With step 1's you should not have any problems with idle. The thing I can see that will differ from your setup from the setup I have with cams is your VTC. It may be causing some goofy behavior and causing some lumpiness in the idle. You could have gone with s13 sr cams at those durations and use the cam sprockets from the s13 to kill the vtc.

I staggered my cams on a simple premise. Turbo engines don't have a hard time cramming air into the cylinders to make power, but have a hard time getting the burned gases out. So by making the exhaust side stay open a bit longer, more of the burned gas will escape.

Well, GOOD NEWS!!! I guess my lifters just needed to get good and primed. It runs excellent now and the vtc works. I can tell a big difference in the power band as well. I recommend the stage one to anyone. The car ran great after about the 5th time I drove it. I drove it all day today and not a single problem.

awesome. wouldn't the lash adjusters having no oil in em cause the motor to run a bit noisy?

Damn you're lucky. When I had air in my lash adjusters it made the motor sound like a train chugging along. Grr....

Yeah I ran into that problem as well lol. Ive had them awhile. Just not installed. I finally called jeff at heavythrottle and they had one pair of s14 step 1s on the shelf. Apparently the s13 sr20s are more popular than the s14 due to price. I just got lucky for once..
