I'm back in the Z again after 35 years! Purchased an orange 1978 280Z in excellent shape from a very nice gentleman in New Smyrna Beach, Florida yesterday (advertised in this forum). The car is mostly stock and extremely well maintained. Of course there's a list of mods I would like to make and will need assistance from this forum.
Among these is a good tune up, going to rear disc brakes and considering power steering. If anyone can suggest a great Z care center in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area that could handle these jobs I would greatly appreciate the contact.

Welcome aboard, David! We were proud to feature that Z, and ecstatic to see it sell for what it did.

Rear discs are a nice upgrade, but I'd recommend improvements on the fronts first - believe it or not, the aluminum drums did a great job on the 280Z. You'd see MUCH more improvement from a set of aggressive front pads, a slightly larger master cylinder, and some slotted vented front rotors. Before ANY of that, a set of SS braided brake lines are a MUST on that car. All of those will net you MUCH more braking performance than a rear disc conversion.

When you do the rear discs, the Maxima upgrade is pretty simple and won't break the bank.

I can help you with the power steering (check out zpowersteering.com).

welcome to NICO! :wavey:

Here's a link to the power steering you're going to need, especially if you're going to upgrade the power or get wider tires. I'm running 255/45 R16s and can do figure 8's in reverse, steering with one finger.

Thanks very much for all the great info and suggestions.
Definitely understand the master cylinder, braided hoses and front disc upgrades but wouldn't it be ideal to do the rear at the same time with matched components. Just like a Maxima upgrade for the rear is there also a Nissan part off another model that can be used up front?
Contacted the Zpowersteering guys and that's on the way already. Looks like an amazing product. BTW, did you guys tap the fusebox for power to that unit?
Thanks again and looking forward to much more info sharing with you.

Typically, Z folks going for a "mild" brake [hardware] upgrade will go with a Toyota 4x4 front setup, with vented rotors. We have that on our Z, and it stops shorter than our C5 Corvette did.

Wiring for the PS unit: Heavy red wire goes straight to battery +, small red wire goes to a switched ignition source. Pretty simple! :)
