I've been riding the light rail (train) to school lately to avoid traffic and parking fees and today when I got back my car had been broken into. They smashed my passenger window, popped off that little piece of trim (which won't go back on right), and then tore the stereo out. Bracket, little storage space under it and all. I didn't think to look if the screws broke off in it or not. They didn't even un-lock the door to do it. They just reached in through the window, rip, tear and were gone. The stereo itself is nothing. It was an older model Sony MD player that doesn't even do LP mini-disks. What really pissed me off is that I have to replace the glass and find a new bracket! At least they left the CD changer. I guess since it was in the trunk it was too much trouble. And mine wasn't the only car they hit in that parking lot.I'm going to call around and try to find some glass prices before I decide to call insurance since I have a high deductible. Tomorrow I'm going to clean out the glass and assess the damage when its light outside. May start hitting the classified forums for that bracket.Just thought I would vent here a bit. This'll teach me to leave the faceplate on my future cheap stereo I'm getting to replace it. Darned kids. Anyone know any good glass shops in San Jose? I'm new to the area...I'll probably just flip through the yellow pages tomorrow morning. Argh. I need some sleep.

suck it happens to everyone at sometime or another. It happened to my a few times. A simple flashing led and battery does wonders by keeping unwated people out. Sorry to hear they broke the window. Seriously if they knocked on my door and asked to steal my radio I would have unlocked the door.

yeah that shure sucks, a few years ago I get up to go to work in the morning and I go out to my daily and I see glass all around my car on the passenger side and get this shisty feeling. I have a pretty kick *** system in there and I fear the worse but the dumb kids only managed to break my cd deck trying to seemingly take the face off of a non removable face radio and didnt take anything out of the car so I was kinda lucky , I moved outa that joint when the lease was up and got a place with a garage. I went to a big junk yard and got some glass for like 35 bucks and installed it right in the junk yard parking lot.

574-240sx: Yea. It was just my turn. I've managed to avoid getting broken into for the last 7 years and 3 cars. I had actually budgeted for an alarm next month, but it looks like I should have done it this month. Or at the least the flashing LED idea. And yeah, all they had to do was ask for it!

slow s13: I may check out the junkyards if I have time to do it today. Since you did it right there I'll assume it isn't too hard. I got myself a place with a garage as well. I was worried about this type of thing happening at home so when I found this place it almost became a no-brainer for me.

240Drift: Yeah, they have security but he rotates around from station to station. They probably waited until there wasn't that many people at the station itself (since its mostly used by commuters) and then when the security guy left he went to work. He was pretty good at it. Unlike slow s13, this guy knew what to do and hit a couple cars in that lot. Just browsed around, took what he wanted, and left before the security guy came back around. Tho, security was hanging out when I got back. We'll see how it is today.

Crap happens. I'm not going to let it get to me. Just get the window fixed, new radio, and get that new shifter in and continue to have fun!

Just a final update to let you all know what going on. I got a new window today, which was nice and fast and relatively cheap. I went to the Pick-Your-Part today to look for new stereo mounting brackets and one of those shelf things that go under the radio. Of course, my stupid self forgot a screwdriver, but there is a glass shop right next to it and I went in. Long story semi-short, they put in a used window (probably from the P-Y-P) for $85 and I was in and out in under an hour and the got more of the busted glass I had missed.

Quite pleased with it and thanks to those of you who offered to sell me yours! If I had internet during the day I would have taken you up on it, but this was just too convenient at the time.

tyrannix: Ya know....I never thought about Lexan. My main thought was "crap. I'm going on a road trip this weekend. I need new glass!" Plus it might look funny on a 99% stock car with one non-glass window? I dunno. Now that you mentioned it, I am going to store that thought away as a future possibility.

good to hear you got it squared away for fairly cheap. They broke mine the day before an autocross but I still made it.
