I went over to pick apart Sunday, HALF PRICE DAY, to go get a j30 vlsd 5bolt rear end and axle shafts. i went in and found the car i had previously scoped out. but decided to take another look around and there and behold was a 96 with a 6bolt YAYYYYYY i don't have to buy the axle shafts. so i dropped the rear end and payed 60$ for it .

So i was reading the links that someone else posted on the rules for the LSD's and one of the link states that the 95-96 6bolt diff requires no modification and can bolted right up. What about the front covers? (i know for a fact you got to change those.)

The other link says that yo do have to swap the covers and... the 95-96 equipped with ABS has a longer half shaft by about half an inch longer.

"The Infinity J30 uses an ABS sensor that attaches to the input of the diff. If you have an ABS equipped 240, this will be the same sensor ring. This sensor ring requires that you have a drive shaft that is approximately .55" shorter than the non-ABS counterpart. If you do not have ABS, you will have two options. First, you can buy the ABS drive shaft. Second you can buy the non-abs diff input. This information was provided by Bill Redding, also a 240SX chat list subscriber."

My car being a s13 non abs car has a longer drive shaft. and he says you got to find a ABS drive shaft . but i also read somewhere a while ago that our s13's drive shafts have enough play in them to make it fit anyways but cant seem to find the thread anymore.

Can anyone confirm this? and does anyone know about aftermarket solid front bushings for the vlsd, or bushings for the front cover off the s13 Open diff.

i have a non-ABS s14 and i'm running a s13 vlsd with the ABS sensor. I know that a j30 vlsd will bolt right in my s14...ispo facto that vlsd should fit no problem.

there are different mounting points on the front of the diff(s13's use smaller bushings/s14's and j30's use larger bushings) but the holes line up with your frame so some longer bolts should do the trick. I'm not 100% sure as I'm going off memory.

Wait so I've always wondered this, I have a non-abs 1997 SE what year J30 diff would I need to get, it depends on the amount of bolts right?

just read that you can fit it in with the non abs transmission like you said but there's questionable wear to your rear transmission seal and carrier bearing. im happy with that. so glad to know it will fit with the old drive shaft.

OBTW i did end buying the back half of the drive shaft too because the bolts on it were seized, ended up tacking them off with a die grinder at home. I wonder if you can combine the half's... of the old s13 drive shaft and the j30 abs drive shaft. hopefully that wouldn't cause any balance issues. ill take a look at it when i start to install it.

but now what about those bushings i heard that you either get some solid ones for the rear of the VLSD so that the rear of the VLSD and the front cover that you put on from the s13 open diff are solidly mounted. OR you can keep the rubber bushings from the back of the VLSD and find some bushings for the s13 open diff front cover so that the whole thing ride on bushings.

does anyone one know where you can get either of these?

you will be best off with a 95-96 6 bolt vlsd you wont have to change the front covers and you can squeeze yoru old drive shaft in to make it fit = no modifications for you!

well i ran into the same problem and i research and some people had there transmission bearings go out (the bearings where the trans and drive shaft meet) because the drive shaft was too tight between the trans and diff. I was able to swap the vlsd internal into the open diff but i haven't got the change to give it a test but i heard from other people that they were able to swap the internals too and they haven't had a problem.....(correct me if i am wrong)
