A couple days ago - I got rear-ended in my G35. Traffic Stopped quickly. I stopped, the Subaru behind me stopped, but the van behind her did not. The van smashed into the Subaru, which got pushed hard towards me. I saw it coming so I turned into the left land and gunned it, but still got clipped. Lady behind me was taken to the hospital... so I feel pretty fortunate to walk away.

Trouble is, one day later my "check engine soon" light came on. I manually pulled the codes and got P0441 and P0455. In the FSM, the codes are "EVAP control system" and "EVAP control System - gross leak detected..."

Are these likely to be a result of the accident? Any risk driving it until we get the insurance worked out? Estimate was $4500. I'd post a pic - but not entirely sure how.

Wow, Sorry to hear your trouble. Those 2 codes are fuel evaporates from the system. Have you tried your gas cap? Most common problem with this codes are the gas caps. Maybe one of the hose got loosen at the accident.

I would check first the gas cap and if that seems to be ok then would make sure to monitor your gas usage. If the car is drivable. Also make sure you report this to the insurance company to add it to the list.

Hope this helps.

Also here is a how to for pictures.

zerothread/254009Good luck and keepp us posted. Really hope everything works out good for you.

if the car was crashed on the back passenger side that is where the gas cap is and their is probably something wrong.

Make sure the insurance company takes this into account when they are repairing the car.

Zozo is probably on the right track. To allow for flex, almost all cars have a flexible hose that sits between the fuel filler pipe and the gas tank. If the impact pushed in the unibody, there's a good chance the body moved and the tank didn't causing a tear or separation in the flex hose. Result - air leak. Your only risk may be if the above mentioned leak spills fuel when you're gassing up. If it was my car, I would bring it to the collision shop that's going to do the work and ask if they could look for any leaks or tears in the line or fuel tank. If there are any, tell the van's insurer that the car is unsafe to drive and you will need a rental. Also, don't get sucked in to going to one of the insurance companies repair shops. There are enough threads on this board to suggest, you get a repair that will be unsatisfactory to you. This is a quality car, get a quality repair.

Man, sorry about this incident. I hope it gets resolved soon. The G is such a delicate car on the outside, but tough as nail on the inside.

Thanks for the thoughts. I guess the guy's insurance adjuster is coming out tomorrow to give me another estimate. Since I am allowed to pick my shop (and I have a good referral), they are just going to cut me a check for the fix (and arrange a rental). If the actual cost is higher than the estimate, the shop and the insurance will work it out.. any other advice?

Thanks for the link to the image upload instructions... here it is:

That looks ugly!

I hope it never happens to me or any other members.

wow your g35's engine saved you from a full rear end... your great engine allowed you to escape with hopefully minor damage if no fuel line got hit

wow what a great car! just want to put another spin on your accident

glad you ok

The dented part of your bumper is where the evap canister resides. I don't think it's the fuel filler, I am about 99% positive that your evap canister is ****ed.

Make sure it gets looked at/replaced by the insurance company. Evap canisters are ridiculously expensive.

Best I could find for all the parts Canister/Purge Solenoid/Purge Valve/Pressure Sensor is @ $515. I am sure I am forgetting something also.

Thanks everyone- I think you're right beancooker. I looked at the FSM and saw that the location of the canister is right there (lucky me). I got a check from the other guys insurance, and have an appt at the shop Monday to begin the repairs. I'm trying to put limited mileage on it right now - and I've noticed the fuel mileage has been slightly worse since the accident.

The auto-rebuild shop called today and said the estimate is higher, now that they have been able to get inside it. Apparently there is some frame rail damage, and the trunk liner is damaged. You can't really see in the pic, but the rear quarter panel needs work - it got messed up too. And of course it runs all the way up to the a-pillar. The estimate has essentially doubled to just under $10k....

wow. these cars are expensive to fix. good thing I'm not paying for it.

I have a rental PT Cruiser - and it sucks.

Sorry to hear about that,I would be concerned with amount of damage and getting the G back in shape before the accident.I'm not crazy about any workdone on the frame after an accident, just me.

Same here. If the frame needs to be fixed that won't be the same again. Not if you have another accident. Won't hold up as good as the first time. Try to put up a little fight. The resale value will drop on your car. They should compansate tha too.

Sorry to hear about the car. Dealing wiwth the insurance can be a PITA. Make sure to get everything worked out and don't back down if they try to not take care of it all. If normal nice talking doesn't produce results talk about bringing a lawyer into things. That wakes them up.
