Can sombody gimme the rundown on the use of foglights? From what I understand, normal halogen and HId color temperature lights reflect too highly off water particles in front of them, i.e. rain, snow, fog, and obstructs the driver's view of the road? The yellow lights of foglights reflects less off the precipitation and more on the road?
The reason I ask is because all I have on my 93' S13 are Sylvania Silverstar sealed beam headlights. I've driven in VERY heavy snow and rainfalls. I see fine on highways going up to 85 mph. Sure it takes a little more concentration, but once you focus on the road ahead and not on the rain and snow, it's fine. Going at highway speeds with a clean windshield and good wipers results in enough wind to blow snow right off anyway, almost without wipers.
I've never really driven in any intense fog, albeit some morning fog where visibility is about 30 feet. Does the yellow light really cut through fog during the day? How about at night?
And for those who will advise me not to drive 85mph in rain and snowstorms...note taken. It's all about knowing the limitations of your car, and how the power is being transferred from the tires to the road. On empty straightaways, driving in tire paths with snowtires while concentrating is quite easy. No slippage at all. I've driven up to 85 mph from Buffalo,NY to Albany (5 hours) through a snowstorm while everyone else was going 50mph, under complete control.
