woo hoo!!! ****ing rock!got the oil pan back on, connected everything, filled it with oil. turned the car on. and it didn't explode. :ylsuper

I've had the battery off since friday, and I figured it would idle rough for a bit. it started really rough, and continued to idle rough for like 2 seconds, then mellowed out. RPM was at 900-1000, and every now and then would dip to like 700, sounded like the engine was "coughing", I guess I would put it. and then a bunch of smoke started comming off from the exhaust side. I figured it was just oil, WD-40, and liquid wrench burning off.

there are these two heavy bracket things that connect the motor to the transmission, are these really necessary?

edit: There's also a slight ticking sound. it's really short and sharp, and it's kinda random.

If it came off, it's probably necessary to put it back on... is it part of the crossmember that you had to take off to get to the pan?

I didn't take off the part that goes accross the car, that is right below the pan. it's just these two brackets that bolt to the engine and transmission. maybe they're for extra support?

I know those braces. Look like an L with a folded lip? When I worked on mine I wondered the same thing. Looks to me like their to help support the lower quarter or so of the bell housing when the car is under heavy torque. I don't know how effective they are but I left them. Better safe then sorry.
