Check out the airbox I made. No more hot air and radiant heat from that header. I'm sure it will help on these real hot summer days. I took it for a quick spin, the car felt good, didn't really get into it enough to notice a difference yet. I can tell you this, if I put my hand between the back of the box and the header, the air is HOT. If I put my hand to the inside of the box, the air is much much cooler. It comes real close to the hood when it is shut too. I'm probably going to close the side gaps with some strips of rubber or something. Might make a top for it too, so that it doesnt pull air between the hood and the upper edge of the box. What do you guys think? It was about $20 in material from Lowes.

use some aluminum duct tape to cover the whole thing...i find the stuff to be VERY good for thermal conduction...i'm talking like keeping EGTs up...fireball machine :pface

I used acrylic glass, basically plexi. I just painted it black. It will definitly help keep in intake air temp down! It was a pain to make b/c of the odd shape. The measurements took a little bit to get right. It is bolted down using the 2 studs with nuts that held the stock airbox in place!

Yeah, I could go step by step and provide measurements as well. I just may do that if you guys are interested in making on for yourselves. I'm probably going to add some to it. I wanna seal it off pretty good so that the majority of the air comes from that oval shaped hole where the cold air extension would go. I just got tired of that open filter getting that hot air from the engine and all. I may also drive it and take my temp gun and see how hot the air outside of it is and how cool the air around the filter is. I can feel a big difference with my hand, probably a good 20 degrees or so at least. I'll check it tomorrow!!

I'll work on it. I may change a few measurements so that the gaps will be smaller. Like I said, it was a real pain to try to measure the thing, but, now that I have one built, I can update the design a little. I drove it quite a bit today and I must say that it feels alot better in the upper rpms. I'm quite pleased with the results. I think I can get more out of it by blocking it in even more. I could use foam at the top so that it seals against the hood too!!

Ok, here is a little drawing I made real quick with some deminsions on it. The piece to the top left is the side, the hole is where the intake tube goes thru, it should be made about 1/4" or more larger than the pipe itself so that there is enough clearance for easy installation and for when the pipe may move due to engine torque. The edge of this that is farthest to your left is the front edge, which will end up right behind the headlight. The next piece is the one that is to the right, that is the backside that will keep that radiant heat from the header out. The 5" edge is the bottom, 8" is the top, the left edge will be at 90 degrees to the right edge of the side piece. The piece below that is the bottom. The 8" edge is the front and will come real close to the oval opening where a cold air extension would normally go. I left out the right side (which would end up closest to the coolant resevoir) This piece will be an odd shape and should be measured and made up AFTER the other three pieces are assembled. Now, you can use sheet metal, plexi, whatever floats your boat as the material (as long as it will withstand some heat) I used some little 90 degree brackets that are used for shelving and some sheet metal screws to fasten it all together. All of this can be bought at the hardware store (or even wal mart). 2 brackets for each edge is plenty, 1 for the 5" edges. Once it is all assembled, test it for fitment.....

1. Remove air filter and loosen intake pipe at the throttle body so that it can be moved up or down with ease. 2. Angle the box so that the pointed front edge of the bottom piece is down. It will find its way partially under the coolant resevoir. Insert the intake pipe as the box is lowered down. 3. Position the box for best fitment and mark where the 2 studs that stick up from the chassis touch the bottom of the box. 4. Drill the holes for the studs to go through and reinstall the box.5. Fasted the box down using the nuts from the 2 studs. Make sure the box is all the way down, don't put the 2 spacers that are on those studs under the box as it may make it too high and it will hit the hood.6. After a sure fit is made, you can go ahead and paint it or insulate or whatever you like.

Ok, update**

I have now insulated the box with some aluminum insulation. I was finding that the box was getting pretty warm after driving for awhile, which would heat up the area around the filter. After insulation and blocking the filter in more by closing the gaps off, the box stays totally cool. I'll get some pics up tomorrow!!

Notice the gaps that were there before are now closed off by the heat insulation. I could put a top and a front on the box, then run a tube down to grab some of that cooler air and direct it to the filter area. It wouldn't be ram air since the box is not totally air tight, so, there wouldn't be any of the problems that people associate with ram air set-ups on mass air cars. I think I'm going to trade out the Injen filter for one from Apexi. I read some tests on another thread and that filter was the best by far. Ive never really cared for this Injen filter anyway. I may also insulate the intake tubing as well :) What do you guys think?? Anyone tried one of these setups yet?

No, the part at top left is the left side where the intake pipe comes through. The part to the right of that is the backside, the part below that is the bottom. This is very simple to make.

I didn't put a diameter b/c yours may be different I guess if you are using a different type of intake. Just measure the air filter adapter with a measuring tape and make the hole about a 1/4" or so larger. Very simple.
