Is it different? Yes. Was it cheap? Yes. Is it functional? ???

I used a 3.5" hole saw to place the hole slightly in front of my air filter. Got some metal grating (better looking than chicken wire) painted it black with some high temp enamel and attached it to the backside. Also used some fray check on the edges of the hole to keep the carbon fiber from unraveling. What do you guys think?

It looks sweet but...what's going to happen when it rains?

What would be badass is if you paint the grating red, move the take off the current nismo decal, get a bigger one, and have the hole be the O in nismo.

your Car looks really good, I was think of putting an NACA duct there for air to the filter but I haven't got around to even really planning it. Yeah what will you do when it rains? You should carry tape with you so when it rains you can just cover it up.

so is it functional?

not busting your balls, but for some reason i think there won't be much air going in there. Just think about it for a second. Air travels from a high pressure zone to a low pressure zone. So you have 2 high pressure zones1. the one going in through the front grill and into your bay.2. the one caused by aerodynamics and sweeping through the car's body.

So, if say, high pressure zone 2 has enough time to get sucked into the hole, it will work, but there is just no aerodynamical restriction (mini hood scoop) to redirect the air into the hole. However, I am not condemning your efforts as futile or saying it won't work... Sometimes I like to play engineer.

BTW, a fix for the water would be to use a similar item to that of the installs section where the guy made a hole in the bumper and closed/opened it at will w/some metal open/close thingy.

I probably shouldn't chime in, but it does remind of The Simpsons where Homer was putting "speed holes" in the hood of his car.

He lives in Cali, and I assume SoCal so I'm sure rain isn't the biggest problem

"speed holes" HAHAHAHAHA! In response to everybody's questions about rain, I'll probably just use tape. What do people with real vented hoods do to keep the water from getting into fuses boxes, wires and everything else under the hood?

if there arent any major wire connections right under the hole i woudlnt worry about it too much. for a year i was running CAI on my kat with the filter right at the huge opening in the side of my bumper with no fender covers in the wheel well. i never had a problem. if you have ever cleaned an air filter you see water can go out from inside easily but coming in from outside doest work so well

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about water. To suck water up through the intake, it has to be pretty much submerged.

in response to the vented hood question.

on a quality hood, the vent is right behind teh radfiator so if water was to go in there, it SHOULD just fall through the engine bay onto the ground. now, i'm sure it isn't a great idea to let loads of water go in there, but some probably won't be bad.

anyways, your hood hole seems dissapointing.

I for one, would like to see how that small scoop would look on that hood. don't they have the slotted vents for the hood? why don't you just get one of those and mod it. or fabricate one yourself.

speed holes...preceless. Homer can only learn 7 things...if there's anything you should learn from the simpsons...DON'T learn japanese, you'll forget how to drive your car!!!!!!!!!! that'll just defeat the purpose won't it?

The rear AC vents in a late model GM SUV such as the Tahoe might be the same size as your hole and have adjustable vanes so you could open and close them, plus they are plastic, so no rust. Paint it what ever color you want.

another body kit thread? Nope, we've got body mods here, no kit installs or polls or "what do you think is tyte!?!" so this thread passes inspection. I didn't see an underhood shot to see how clean the backside is, do you have a photo of that?

Rewire the car to have them moved. Under the dash or other cool spots. I intend to rewire my car and have them somewhere cool. Like on my roof, YEAH! and i can paint it yellow!

Finished? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! But seriously, I've had the car for a little over a year and a half now. Bought it bone stock from a co-worker. Saved it is more like it. It was in pretty rough shape before.
