i was finally able to borrow an mdm techdom to put on my car. im running an msd btm on a stock auto ecu (i converted to 5spd). my problem was at any setting past .5 degrees of retard for every pound of boost my car would fall on its face having no power. i thought my base timing might have been too retarded, which it was but by only 3 degrees. well i plugged the mdm in today and took it out for a little while.

under WOT i was getting readings of 14-17degrees total timing on the stock ecu!!! for those that arent too familiar with timing let me explain a couple things. the stock ka ecu supposivly runs about 26-28 degrees total timing under WOT and peak load. if you do anything to change timing via btm, emanage, or retarding base timing you will still see the original ecu map on the mdm. to read how much you retard the timin you would need to be on a dyno with a timing light.

i even set the btm to 2 degreees of retard per psi of boost and it had no power but the timing on the mdm read the same as when i was at .5 degrees of retard per psi. im runing 13psi right now so at .5/psi that would be 6.5degrees of retard and at 2/psi that would be 26 degrees of retard. yet either way the mdm still reads 14-17degrees at wot in 3rd at 4th gear under full load.

i already talked to klattr1 and he is stumpped. does anyone have any idea how my stock ecu could be doing this? im going to try to get a hold of a local 240 friend to get the mdm on his car and see his readings.

just plugged the mdm into my friends 95 s14 5spd and at wot his read 27-28degrees total. maybe it it has something to do with the automatic ecu. maybe i can find some local with a stock auto to try this out on.

also i just remembered that his tps at idle was .42 volts and mine is .52.his engine temp was only up to 100 degrees (needle still on c) the whole time, t-stat must be stuck open. while my engine temp is 180degrees

TPS position will effect timing as well as IAT and engine temp. But I don't think it will cut timing down to the teens. SO I understand correctly, you swapped in a 5speed but kept the auto ECU?

If so when done on a Silvia in Japan we ran into quite a few problems with timing and stalling issues. All of which were fixed when the manual ECU was installed.

How hard was the install of the Techtom? Wanna do a write up?

i dont really have any issues using the auto ecu.

if you look at the fuse panel inside the car in the drvier kick panel looks at the top of the panel. there is a female end of a plug sitting horizontally. the techtom plugs right into this. i believe this is what the dealerships plug the CONSULT into. 30 second install.

btw the car pulls super strong now. i just need to close the gap on the plugs some. or get a 6al to replace my btm since it seems like i wont need it anymore
