So today my drivers side window stopped working. Checked voltage. I'm getting power to the switch for the passenger window (which works) but am not getting power to the drivers window switch. When I tried jumping the power from the passenger switch to the driver switch, it sparked a little and I got no power to the switch still. I figured out the wiring by looking under the cover for the switches before I tried jumping (and verified with a wiring diagram). I know the Z32 has a transistor that has been known to fail. Do we have one hidden away? If not, what could be causing my driver's window switch to not receive power? I don't want it to be a short from a damaged power wire, so I was hoping someone would know another culprit possibility.

The switch itself is a common issue on the Z31.

Page 11, first diagram: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/300zx/1984/BF.pdf

On the bottom right of the diagram, it shows the pins and a combination. For rolling the window up on the drivers side, it shows pins 1 and 3. I've tried jumping those two pins with no luck while even pushing the up on the switch and not pushing on the switch. All I hear is a single tick when I push the button up or down. Still kinda new with power window systems. Previously though (since I've had the car till now), in two places, the window stops moving like it sticks. I can either push down or pull up the window (depending on if I'm rolling it up or down) and it would work till it hit the next spot. The motor hasn't made any odd noises prior; except when the window would stick, it would make a grinding noise. Any tips/tricks to try?

It's not just 1 and 3, 2 and 4 must also be connected, just as to roll down 1 and 4 must contact while 2 and 3 contact. If you jumper power direct to the wondow motor does it work? If you don't already own a power probe it's tasks like this that make them so handy.

I do own a Power Probe 3. Unfortunate thing is I won't have access to it till Monday or Tuesday. If I have time today I'm going to try accessing the motor wires behind the speaker and might use my 10' back probes with alligator clips to supply direct power and ground.

It is the motor unfortunately. I don't suppose I could use the passenger side motor for a quick fix could I?

Figured. I was hoping for one of those hail Mary moments. I'm going to try some stuff later to see if I can get one last hurrah out of the motor as the window is currently stuck down 4" and we are supposed to get snow this weekend. Plus I've got some tools in the car and ran my head unit, amp, and sub (totaling $1100). I'd hate to uninstall and remove everything. But I'll have to do what I can until I can find a working used one that I can afford. Gonna call the yards here to see if they got any Z31's.

You might want to tap on motor while you power it up and see what happens.

I already tried that. I've read how some people have had luck shutting their doors kinda hard while pressing the switch. I was going to try that today. But if that doesn't fair well for me, then I'm going to try to use some vice grips to try and rotate the gear or whatever (will have to disassemble stuff to know for sure) to slowly raise the window up. I do know it's currently stuck right about where the window used to want to fall off the track, so who knows. Maybe that's jammed so hard it's giving symptoms of a bad motor. Too many variables. Makes me wish my Grand Prix wasn't down waiting for a fuel pump (and a nice day) and I had the pistons to finish the last piece and reassemble my built Sunfire (2.2 Ecotec).

I don't want to spend the $130+ (even from RockAuto). Does anyone have one for the driver's side? I've got a friend looking at the yards in the Cleveland area on Monday and Tuesday. Let me know if you have one and the price you want for it (obviously must be a working motor).

Okay, bigger problem it seems like. The seller of the window motor said they load tested the motor (over 5500 positive reviews, so I took their word). However, even when using my power probe to run the motor without the switch, no go. for both motors. Is there something that I may be missing? The regulator moved fine and wasn't snagged on anything when I disassembled the assembly to remove the old motor. Or is it just that the motor was indeed crap? I know engines, not all the accessory crap (other than wiring it up).

if the motor doesnt d anything when supplied with power and ground in either polarity it's a dead motor, might have been a good motor right up till it broke ;)

The seller wants me to spray some wd40 on the gear and move the gear with pliers in case it temporarily seized.
